About this listen

#1 New York Times best-selling author Nora Roberts presents a passionate story from the thrilling Night Tales series.…

They called him Nemesis. He walked the dark alleyways alone, a shadow among shadows - and that's the way he liked it. Until the night he saved Deborah O'Roarke from an attacker and rediscovered the quiet ache of yearning lodged in his heart. It had been a long time since he had wanted to reach out to someone…. But Deborah was an idealistic prosecutor who played by the rules and abhorred the vigilantism of her mysterious defender. Could she come to love the phantom who lurked in the Night Shadow?

This book focuses mainly on the romance between the two main characters and how they feel about each other. They have an instant attraction to each other and it is obvious from the outset that they will overcome any obstacle to be together. This detracts from the romance which would have been far better with a slower build up.

The background story is much better. It involves the Nemesis character wanting vengeance on the criminal who killed his best friend, and the assistant DA, Deborah, wanting to track down a drug dealer who is causing devastation in the city. This is a good plot with some tension and action as Deborah makes progress with the investigation, and the drug dealers see her as a threat. The action scenes are quite good. There is also a good twist in the end which I didn't see coming.

If the book had spent more time focusing on the plot, and built up the romance at a reasonable rate instead of undying love at first sight, this could have been a much better book. This is the first Nora Roberts I have read. I didn't feel inclined to rush to get another, but you never know. The performance was better than the story. Kate Rudd handled the accents and different voices well, and put some feeling into the dialogue.

Not as good as I had hoped!

What did you like best about Night Shadow? What did you like least?

It is an easy listen but the characters are a little flat, a little too common place

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

The characters need to be less stereotyped, the action more plausible in places

Which character – as performed by Kate Rudd – was your favourite?

The old neighbour

If this book were a film would you go see it?

no

Any additional comments?

An easy listen but a disappointment if considering the skill of that author

I felt the narration of this was dreadfully dull. I tried to get on with it, because the story seemed promising, but could only make it through four chapters before shelving. I might pick this up again in paperback.
