Summary

After narrowly surviving my debut into the magical world, I made a promise to myself: no more hiding in broom closets. But with the Mages' Guild reorganizing faster than anyone thought possible, and naming me as their number one target, that promise seems a little far-fetched. Especially since my training with Callie and Dizzy, the highly experienced dual-mage pair, goes off like a cake in a cannon. Left to find someone that can fill the role, it isn't until a formal dinner party goes horribly wrong that I find the best (and worst) solution imaginable: Reagan Somerset, the leather-clad crazy woman who busted into my broom closet sanctuary in the first place. Through an off-kilter teaching style and many punches in the face, I learn my true potential. But with her happier busting heads and kicking in doors than staying put with a pupil in hiding, it isn't long before the world comes crashing down. The Guild has found me, and they intend to take me alive.

Good addition to the Regan Somerset story

I enjoy KFs writing and loved the fire and ice series so was looking forward to starting this, I will say the heroine of this series (Penny) is no Regan! More of a Bridget Jones with magic, which to be honest I’m not a fan of- I like my heroines to know their own mind and be tough yet vulnerable rather than just vulnerable. I also do not think I’ve come across a ruder or more unlikable character than Penny’s mother!! The entrance of Regan and Darius saved this series for me and I do love Penny and Regans friendship and would love to see that blossom (female friendships are often forgotten in romance novels but it’s so good to read) I would definitely recommend it to fans of supernatural romance but I’d say read Fire and Ice first. Looking forward to the third book!

Love this series!

Wowser! I'm suffering from a book hangover! The story is very entertaining, hilarious, and it was just simply cool that characters from the Fire and Ice trilogy make a substantial appearance in this book! I laughed, yelled, and wanted to help kick some rear! The story was unpredictable and exciting! The characters are snarky, sarcastic, and quite funny! Going back for a second listen! Nicole Poole did a nice job with providing individual voices for each character and appropriate tone inflections for each scene.

Go Penny!

Well that was a bowl of crazy mage and fireball soup! Go Penny! I love how this character has developed from a novice to a novice with a powerful magical punch. She’s unpredictable at the best of times and totally out of her element at the best of times. It’s the best game of cat and mouse I’ve ever seen!

While training with the dual mages things just don’t seem to go right so Darius, vampire elder pulls his cards and puts her with his bonded warrior to train. Needless to say, Penny and Reagan together is a sight to behold and an explosion waiting to happen. No matter the method used, Reagan is the best one to train her.

Aside from Emory....

So when he shows back up things take a whole new turn. It’s as if no time has passed yet the bond that pulls them closer makes both Emory and Penny realize just how special the two of them are to each other and as a team.

Heads start to roll and it’s a lot of fun watching things unfold... I can’t wait for more!

Love it

I enjoyed this series. The main character was great! She was not a wimpy, wining little thing. And of course I love witchcraft and supernatural stuff so I enjoyed this one.

Great series so far

I was very impressed w/this series. I have to admit that the reason I bought this book is because Nicole Poole is one of my 3 favorite narrator's. I'm glad I did. Penny & Emmery are great together & I've fallen in love w/Reagan. She is a boss b**ch w/good intentions. Look forward to reading about her & Darious.
I've always wondered in almost every book about the supernatural vampires get the rawest deal. They are always considered untrustworthy because sum abuse their power. But in every book there are ones who seem to help the witches, mages, werewolves, etc...against others vampires, witches, mages, werewolves, etc.... Then aren't the other supernaturals just as corrupt & vampires are hated by them just because the are the strongest. People fear what they do not know. But then they complain about humans fearing them. Isn't it exactly what they do to the vamps???? Lol

Great Great follow up to Natural Witch!

I absolutely loved this story, or I should say am loving it. As I said in my review of Natural Witch, just 3 days ago, this is reminiscent of KF Breene's "The Warrior Chronicles" series, only in an urban setting, whereas Chosen was in a world, in the, sort of medieval times. That matters not here, what matters is the fantastic writing she throws out there, for us, the fans to eat up. I know I do. I have read many of her series's, I don't go in for the extreme romance stuff, I do like the way she does it here, in the DDVN World. I loved it also in the World of The Warrior Chronicles. This story has been building so well. In the very beginning of Natural Witch I was questionable. but I loved the sassy spark that Penny exuded, which has gotten even more sassy, I love it. I am a soldier and warrior at heart and there's nothing that grabs a hold of me like honor, and there is a good deal of honor in this story. I was an Army Ranger, so I ascribe to "leave no one behind". That saying goes all the way back to Greece, in the B.c. era, when Sparta was a warrior nation state, the saying started as "I will come back with my shield, or on it". Sorry for the rambling, honor just means a great deal to me, I see a lot of honor in Emory, for he truly thought she was safe but I digress. I will sum this up as a middle part of the story that is absolutely, magically delicious read. Don't miss this one, and now on to "Natural Dual Mage" in The Magical Mayhem trilogy. I love this world Ms. Breene has created; The DDVN World. I'm glad Regan was included in this magical romp.

Not for me

I wanted to like this story. I tried over and over again to listen to it... Rewinding, listening to chapters again, falling asleep "mid
action" scene. I finally gave up.

Full of magic

What a great book. I love Penny so much. Her creative cursing just keeps me laughing. This book we get to see her interaction with a certain fanny pack wearing character and boy can they get into trouble! Can’t wait for the next book.

Disappointing second book.

I barely listened to the last 2/3rds of this while cleaning house because I was so disappointed with the writing after enjoying the first book so much. It was verbose with little excitement or anticipation included that I would normally would have put it down less than half way through. I didn't because I am willing to give the author a third chance in hopes the next book is as good as the first.

I'm done

Penny is an incredibly weak character. She is extremely insecure and timid. That got old real fast. I know that this book focuses on Penny developing her knowledge and power but it was just too juvenile. That's it for me.
