About this listen

Yasmin’s career is finally taking off. After years of fighting for visibility in the theater, the British-Pakistani actress lands the eponymous role of Mrs. Bibi—the ultimate aunty-ji—in a hit primetime sitcom. Her newfound success means a steady paycheck, the possibility of owning her own home, and a carefree fling with a charming young assistant director.

But when her estranged sister arrives with news of their mother, Yasmin's hard-won stability is shaken to its core. Forced to reckon with her ambitions, her family’s needs, and her place in an industry that both elevates and exploits her identity, Yasmin’s world tilts in unexpected ways.

From laugh-out-loud sitcom banter to powerful personal reckonings, Mrs. Bibi by Waleed Akhtar is a surprising, bold, and poignant audio drama that reveals the complexities of navigating personal success while balancing family and identity.

Directed by Tessa Walker with sound design by Tim Kim and Holly Khan and original music by Niraj Chag.

Playwright Waleed Akhtar was awarded a commission through the Audible Emerging Playwrights Fund, an initiative dedicated to developing innovative original plays driven by language and voice. As an Audible-commissioned playwright, he received funding and creative support to develop Mrs. Bibi.

This play lives up to the reputation WA has made for himself as a writer. Big heart, edgy political positioning, entertaining and provoking. Not run of the mill.

Slick storytelling,

I felt that the story was (ironically) stereotypical, but it was well paced and the acting was good and it wrapped nicely! I liked how the story took place on a tv set and juxtaposed sound bites from that, with the protagonists life

A well paced production
