Silas Stone is the lead singer of Blood & Honey, a man who lives for the roar of the crowd and the heat of the stage. As the front man of a duo rock-act in the city of Chi-Tek, alongside childhood friend Ruby Martin, his magic is mostly a gimmick. A way to flash some lightning and keep the groupies coming. It’s a simple life until the portals return and monsters tear through the stadium, turning a sold-out show into a bloodbath and feeding ground.

In the middle of the chaos, Silas discovers he is more than just a well-trained combat mage. He is a descendant of the Raiju.

A rare breed who fuel their magic with Champion Energy, and in a world where public perception is power, his fame is no longer just for his ego. It is a literal battery for his magic.

Rivalries with the elitist Brightfeather Institute flare up and monster incursions threaten to destroy the city, but Silas doesn't have to solve it all on his own. Armed with dual tantos and a voice that can shatter armor and bone, he has the lethal ice-mage Ruby, the brilliant tech-mage Lyla, and the charismatic wolf-girl streamer KK at his back. Who else can you trust but your tribe as the world falls apart?

The show must go on, and Silas Stone is ready to give them an encore they’ll never forget.

A fun setting that in my head kinda blends high-fantasy and the futuristic vibe of Nightcity in Cyberpunk2077 and the corporatocracy vibe, without the cybernetics. The story progresses at a nice pace and for being over 12h long it certainly felt a lot shorter because there was so much fun going on constantly. Thought, I wish there was a bit more time to explore and deepen the bond between the MMC and the FMC, but at least in the first book this is traded for a more action packed phasing with intense and thrilling battles, which is fitting with the setting of the story. While the vibe of the city is well translated, a bit more descriptions of the environment around the MC would make it even easier to imagine the smells, the temperature or how well the cities infrastructure is maintained,

As for the voice actors, I think they did a brilliant job with differentiating the characters with different voices and accents, as well as toning them self into the situation so it matches the vibe.

All in all, I'm positively surprised and I'm looking forwards to see how the story unfolds in the second book.

Great opening book to the series

This book chooses an interesting point in time for it's setting, it is centuries after the initial portal incursions and the dangers of them having been mostly forgotten with the world being a mix of high tech and less offensive uses of mana.

The main cast are firmly in the underdog role opposing the somewhat cartoonish villains that try to present themselves as good through various means. The MC basically being the chosen one could have resulted in an unbalanced power dynamic in a book like this, but the main female characters are written well enough to be more than just accessories to the hero.

The overall performance of the narrator was a strong one with a large variety of distinctive voices for the main cast.

Overall, this was an enjoyable listen and I'll be checking out book 2 for sure.

(Note, I received a free copy of this book in return for a fair review)
