About this listen

A jungle planet must defend against exploitative aliens in this novel by the number one New York Times best-selling author of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

From the rich imagination of science-fiction great Alan Dean Foster comes the story of Midworld, a Humanx Commonwealth planet that's equally fragile and hostile. Covered by a lush rainforest, Midworld is home to a primitive society that lives in harmony with the natural world. But the arrival of an exploitative human company, whose workers know nothing of Midworld's delicate ecosystem, sparks a conflict. Should Midworld's villagers aid the humans or stand against them?

The hero of Foster's addictive pause-resister, Born, decides to lead two humans across the perilous jungle. His choice propels Midworld toward annihilation - and leads him headlong into a battle for survival.

I enjoyed midworld and some of its creatures. The general premise of the story is not unique, but the development of the culture and species was very creative.

A hidden gem of a story.

I read the physical book years ago, and kept expecting Alan Dean Foster to be recognised as one of the greats of Science Fiction.
Things didn't turn out that way, I guess Star Wars and Alien novelizations pay more reliably. But he does tell a good story.

Better than Avatar, which it inspired

Hearing this now in 2024 it is hard not to make associations with Avatar and the world of Pandora. Midworld however is so much more and a far more dangerous and glorious creation. Well read and captivating I can heartily recommend this.

A visit to a Wonderous place
