Story
April 1950: The rusting hulk of a steam locomotive rises from the deep waters of a Montana lake. Inside is all that remains of three men who died forty-four years before. But it is not the engine nor its grisly contents that interest the people watching nearby. It is what is about to come next.... 1906: For two years, the western states of America have been suffering an extraordinary crime spree: a string of bank robberies by a single man who then cold-bloodedly murders any and all witnesses, and then vanishes without a trace....

Polar Shift: It is the name for a phenomenon that may have occurred many times in the past. At its weakest, it disorients birds and animals and damages electrical equipment. At its worst, it causes massive eruptions, earthquakes and climatic changes. At its very worst, it would mean the obliteration of all living matter...

Story
In 1800, while crossing the Pennine Alps, Napoleon Bonaparte and his army stumbled across the pillars. Unable to transport them, Napoleon created an inscrutable map on the labels of twelve bottles of rare wine. When Napoleon died, the bottles disappeared - and the gold pillars were lost once again. Treasure-hunters Sam and Remi Fargo are exploring the Great Pocomoke Swamp in Delaware when they are shocked to discover a German U-boat. Inside, they find a bottle taken from Napoleon's 'lost cellar'.

A Sunday Times best seller
The amazing second Dirk Pitt classic from multi-million-copy king of the adventure novel, Clive Cussler.
Major Dirk Pitt picked up the frantic distress call as he cruised his lumbering amphibious plane over the islands of the Aegean. Brady Air Force base was under fire, its entire force of jets destroyed on the ground...by just one First World War biplane!
A psychotic ex-Nazi, a bloodthirsty Greek strongman and a beautiful double agent set Pitt on the trail of the warped mastermind behind a devastating sabotage plot. And on that trail, danger and death are never far behind....

Heavily dated
Almost uncomfortable with his chauvinism and descriptions of women. Not that exciting, and whilst I still finished it, I lost interest well before the end.

The book is definitely showing its age at 50yrs
I am a Cussler fan but like 60/70s attitudes I think this book is definitely showing its age. Some less desirable traits by Mr. Pitt.

Fun but dated
Fun book, though with an overload of adjectives making it a little slow. Also quite dated in its description of women. Absolutely a product of the 70s. You'd better like clichés!

Very dated and misogynist
I guess there are some books which don't stand the test of time and this is one. Pitt is arrogant and sexist, not at all the debonair adventurer of later books. It also ends very abruptly with Pitt telling us the solution. No idea how he worked it out!
