Summary
Want to expand your German vocabulary with almost no effort? Then keep listening.
Are you planning a trip to Germany? Or sharpening your skills for work? Just press play on this audiobook when you’re sleeping, meditating, or doing chores around the house.
Learn new vocabulary while actively listening, or passively while you’re doing other things.
This audiobook contains:
- More than 1,000 common German words and phrases
- All original music (composed and performed by South African DJ and producer Spirante Beat) specifically to relax your mind
I'm sure your first question is: Can you actually learn a foreign language while you’re asleep? Well, according to a Swiss research study in 2014, the answer is unassailably yes! In this study, a group of German speakers was given a list of unfamiliar Dutch words to study. Half were instructed to get some sleep while they listened to long lists of Dutch words and translations. The other half was instructed to stay awake. Four hours later, they were tested and the group that listened while they slept had significantly higher recall. The study concluded that people can indeed absorb new information passively during non-REM sleep - which is the deep sleep we get in the first few hours of the night.
This audiobook is divided into six chapters, each with different kinds of vocabulary, and with different music. Choose a different chapter each night or loop the audiobook to have a continuous stream. Some listeners - those with more experience with the foreign language - have reported that these recordings allow them to dream in that language!
Sit back, relax, enjoy, and learn!

Excellent book!
I was stunned at how much I actually did pick up on. I credit the narrator for taking a seemingly boring educational task and making it fun!

Relaxing and efficient!
This isn't my first listen in this series of learning languages in your sleep. As always, the music is relaxing (and entrancing!) and I was definitely able to retain some of the greetings and simple vocabulary after only a couple of nights listening to it. I mean, if you're hoping to learn a new language and are short on time (as is the case for most of us) this is a pretty good tool to keep in your library!

Could be improved
The audio has a metallic sound, I found it quite off-putting. There is no accompanying pdf if you want to see how the words you are learning are written, I am aware this is meant for listening, however I feel I was unable to hear certain words properly due to the audio quality and in my view it defeats the purpose. The topics covered are useful and I think if the audio issue were to be fixed I would find it much more relaxing and give a higher rating.

School in Switzerland
I am now 84 years old. When I was six (but within two weeks of my 7th birthday) I was sent to an international boarding school in Switzerland. By Christmas I was fluent in High-German. I returned to the UK four years later. By now I thought and even dreamt in German. English was now my 2nd language with French very much behind at 3rd, and I could count to ten in Italian. Since then I have been to both Switzerland and Germany each for two week holiday in my forties. However I completely failed in all attempts to speak in German. My accent was good; I got the words in the right order but I had completely lost all my vocabulary and within half a sentence we were speaking English.
I played this book last night. I was surprised how many German words I recognised. It was still there though mostly just out of reach. It will take a few night’s listening to get it all back. But I could not get to sleep. Every so often the English translation of a German word would shake me fully awake. In England pants are worn underneath trousers and not talked about in polite conversation; we go to the cinema not to the movie-house and we have taps not faucets. This work is obviously directed towards the US where sadly they do not speak the King’s English.

Very helpful audiobook
This audiobook is great for real beginners and people who have a little German under their belt. The music is soothing and really helps you relax. I've been enjoying listening as I go to sleep. I think it's a great idea. And the narrator is great too.
