Joseph Weizenbaum, geboren 1923 in Berlin und 1936 in die USA emigriert, studierte Mathematik und lehrte seit 1963 als Professor für Computerwissenschaften am MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Durch sein berühmt gewordenes Sprachanalyseprogramm "Eliza" selbst zu einem Pionier der Computergeschichte avanciert, ist Weizenbaum immer auch die warnende, prophetische Stimme eines Prozesses, der den Menschen in die Programmatik seiner Apparate, unter die Übermacht der Maschinen zwingt. Er zeigt in seiner ingeniösen, packenden Art, wie das Werkzeug sich gegen den Schöpfer kehrt und das Menschliche in der Technokratie abdanken muß. Der Glaube, dass Gehirn und Computer sich schlichtweg ineinander übersetzen lassen, führt zur Selbstaufgabe des Menschen, in eine neue Unmündigkeit und letztlich aus der Verantwortung. Ohne Verantwortung aber wird der Mensch nicht überleben.
