About this listen

Twelve women connected by the death of another, realizing what they most want from life and reaching for it - this is the year of discovery, the year of new beginnings.

Orphaned at ten, Melanie Barlow was raised by her grandparents, given everything she could want and cherished by the two people who meant the world to her. Growing up, Mel knew what they expected from her - graduate high school with honors, go to college, get a career in computer engineering, then start a family. The problem was starting a family.

Mel knew early on that she was different and that she wanted different things in her life, but the things she wanted did not fit with her grandparents’ worldview. Mel must now decide whether it’s more important to be herself or if it’s better to lie to everyone, including herself, just to keep the peace.

The sixth, and arguable the best so far, of the stories about individual women linked by the death of Meredith, who had died of breast cancer. In fact, there are two stories here, the main tale plus a glimpse into the life of Meredith's youngest sister, Micah.
The reader travels inside the head of Melanie, a bit of a succubus, an emotional taker who relies on others but gives little in return, accusatory and self pitying. She's going through a bit of a crisis: her girl friend has left her and the beloved grandmother who brought her up after her parents died when she was ten will no longer have anything to do with her since discovering her sexual orientation.

Well written and with an excellent narration from Kelley Hazen, who not only reads with warmth and emotion but also gives excellent voice to each character individually, this is an insightful and enjoyable novella and one which leaves the reader wanting more. My thanks to the rights holder of June, who freely gifted me with a complimentary copy at my request. I look forward to the next in this unusual series, July.

Of course I'll help you, Melanie Barlow.
