About this listen

Tender, magical and captivating – a story of family, friends, and the unlikeliest of romances . . .

Read by Susan Lynch and Rupert Degas. What if love was right there in front of you – you just couldn't see it? Elizabeth Egan is too busy for friends. As a reluctant mother to her sister Saoirse's young son Luke and with her own business to run, every precious moment is made to count. But with Saoirse crashing in and out of their lives, leaving both her sister and her son reeling, Luke and Elizabeth are desperately in need of some magic. Enter Ivan. Wild, spontaneous and always looking for adventure, in no time at all Ivan has changed Elizabeth in ways she could never have imagined. But is Ivan too good to be true? Has Elizabeth opened her heart only to risk it being broken again? As for Ivan, he thought he was there to help Luke not Elizabeth – or himself…

Have read this book in paper, on my phone & now listened to it. Still my absolute "favourite," as Ivan would say. I simply CANNOT stop crying at the end. It is a great ending & even though I know the ending.... I still cry! So funny at times & then so sad. However, It is heart lifting too, a must listen!

The story throughout is really interesting, although I hate how Elizabeth apparently doesn’t realise what her mother is like. Growing up with an alcoholic myself, kids aren’t stupid, they’re very aware of these things, I just don’t find that storyline really believable and I hate how even before she realises that, she still holds someone who abandoned her on such a high pedestal. But most of all, I hate the ending. I hate the whole ‘we have to give up those who we love’ idea. Why couldn’t he just be honest, tell Elizabeth he’s not human, and live out her human life with her? I do t see how his story ended any easier than Opal’s? They both lost who they love, and both humans still died of old age, but at least Opal and her man got 20 years of love and happiness. Some things were just left unanswered too like is Saoirse dead? Is Elizabeth actually going to look for her further than checking a local pub? Did anything happen with Benjamin? I think these things should’ve been explained by the ending. I know not every story can have a happy ending but I was really hoping this one would.

Really interesting story, disappointing ending.

Was very sceptical when I started listening but stuck with it, really enjoyed it in the end, love the narration too.

Different but lovely

Lovely romantic fantasy, cleverly crafted and really sweet; sad, warm and just a lovely listen. Great narration too.

Escapism

I liked the premise of the book and of someone being there to help another through their difficulties. An angel, a make believe person, a being that assists others in their time of need. For me this book did not flow well, the characters were annoying and had no depth, I didn’t feel a pull or any empathy with any of the characters even though the main characters were dealing with loss and despair. Even the conclusion and ending was very Blah and I felt no satisfaction or closure just disappointment.
The narrator was okay, but did not add warmth or depth to the story, it all felt very one dimensional, the story and the narration. I have read and listened to a few of this author’s books and I would suggest giving this one a miss and listening to her other books rather than this one. I wanted to love this book but sadly didn’t, I would not recommend.

I liked the idea of the story but I found this a difficult listen.
