Rene Thompson has been waiting all year for Negro Achievement Day. It falls on the second Monday in October. This is the one day that Negros get to go to the state fair. Mama has been telling her that when she is 10 years old, she will be old enough to go; this is the age when you can answer questions if you happen to get lost. Rene is worried that the nosy neighbors and the good church folks are doing everything possible to convince her father that it is too dangerous for Negros to travel to Dallas.
