Summary
Homicide detective Tori Hunter was used to doing things her way. But even after six different partners in seven years, she was not prepared for the hot-tempered Samantha Kennedy. Samantha, on the other hand, was trying to juggle a new job and a demanding boyfriend and now finds herself with an even greater challenge - being partnered with the most difficult detective in the entire squad. After a brief terrorist scare disrupts their serial killer investigation, the two women find themselves growing closer. Sam begins to question the relationship with her longtime boyfriend, and Tori, never one to allow anyone to get too close, begins to feel her defenses slipping in Sam's presence. While facing a serial killer and drug deals gone bad, the two detectives struggle with their feelings, trying to maintain their professional relationship while keeping their nearly flammable physical relationship in check.

great detective and romance
I was impressed by this one, as the previous one from Gerri Hill did not have the same spark as this one. It's a f/f romance which develops between a brash detective in Dallas homicide and her newly assigned Partner (who did not realise she was actual a lesbian). The relationship develops as they go about solving a string of murders.
Very well narrated by Abbey Craden, and the story moves quickly and the romance develops in a perfect manner. The action scenes are very well done. The only reason for four stars is a bit of awkwardness in a few areas (the department's head response to Hunter is always the same sequence (wth, no, well okay, be careful), some of the romance was too close, time wise to the crime events, so didn't feel realistic, one character changed his homomorphic views too quickly, imo). But I don't what to dwell on these as they are just thoughts for improving. It's one of the top f/f romance/crime stories in audiobook format at moment.

Worth a listen.
I decided to purchase this story based on the reviews and the preview. It definitely didn't disappoint, though at times I found it a little predictable and possible a bit slow the story line was good.
The narrator did a great job, and was good at creating different voices for each characters. In fact one of the best on here!

Thoroughly Enjoyable
I do love a good romance, this is not my first Gerri Hill, and whilst some of the content here is a tad predictable there are twists within that really made the audio book a great listen. The great listen made even better by Abby Craden. I actually finished this wanting more as I completely invested into these characters. I would definitely recommend for any romance and crime fans.

This book was fantastic, the chemistry between Tori and Sam was excellent. I had to keep reading this book to see what happens next.
This is part of a series and I will definitely be buying the next book to carry on the story as I love Tori and Sam and want to carry on with their story.
The story was so action packed and it was so well written.
It was written from both women’s point of view, which was fantastic.
The narration was excellent as always by Abby Craden and she added to the book with her narration.

Could’ve been 5 stars across the board...
**SPOILERS**
This is a good book. I’m a fan of the series & cant wait for more. Solid plot & story, great characters & their development throughout make them even more likable, author did awesome job with the buildup between Tori & Sam (gradually bringing them together as a couple). All of that goes a long way towards making the reader suspend reality for a bit as you listen along & become invested in the story/people. My one problem was the sexual assault aspect mid-book. It totally slices right through the fantasy world being created up to that point & harshly snaps you back in the reality. I found it distracting.
Instead of enjoying the romantic scenes I kept reminding myself Sam was raped less than a week ago lol. The believability of the storyline just isn’t there for me. I’m supposed to give my buy-in to a couple who share their first experience of love making together just a couple days after one of those women was kidnapped, tortured, & violently gang raped? I buy that a female cop would be willing to return to street duty too quickly after such a brutal attack. It’s in most cop’s nature to bury painful experiences & run from their fears.
But I cannot believe any woman would be so quick to seek out that type of intimacy so soon after a sexual assault—especially the type & degree that’s described in this story. It’s just not believable at all to me. Even if the intimacy is with another woman (instead of a man, like her attackers), whom she was falling in love with prior to the attack.
In fact, I feel the author missed a great opportunity to not only lengthen the book overall, but also to build Tori & Sam’s connection on an even more deeper level (i.e. Tori could’ve patiently & compassionately helped Sam recover for at least a couple weeks while slowly leading up to their first sexual encounter with one another). I feel it should’ve been handled that way OR written in a way that the rape was prevented altogether by Tori showing up to save the day just before things escalated. If it was played out that way I’d totally believe Sam would be open to having sex with someone she loved & trusted within a week of the attack. Otherwise, it’s just not believable...I’m sorry.
This really really bugged me. I found myself pretending the rape hadn’t even occurred at all in order to stomach the intimacy being explored between these women after the fact.
I would’ve given 5 stars in all 3 categories if it wasn’t for that...

Important trigger warnings.
I don't normally write reviews, but there's a few important things prospective listeners should know before purchase.
First and foremost, the story includes a fairly graphic rape scene. I personally had trouble with it, probably would not have made the purchase had I know earlier; so if this is a triggering topic, then you might want to find a different title. The characters also move past the emotional fallout of the assault quite quickly, which bothered me a bit given my experiences.
Second, this title deals with some transgender issues in the story. The author seemed to attempt to approach the topic with some sensitivity (from the point of view of the main character), especially given that the book was written over a decade ago. However, the author/characters conflate transgender with transvestite, misgender characters at times (and the minor offense of using the term 'transgendered'), and reinforce the trope of "men in dresses". I personally don't feel that it was done maliciously, but it was still uncomfortable to read and more than a little disappointing.
As for the story, it's entertaining and a good read, but not a masterpiece. Furthermore the character of "Sam" sees too little character development and needs saving so often, it stretches her credibility as a detective. But in the end, I'll give the story 3 1/2 stars, rounded up because I do like a good crime thriller.

Mixed up
Got to wondering about half way through this book if it was a detective story or a gay rights manifesto/romance type book. Turns out, it was a bit of both; a book with a pretty good murder mystery in it along with a pretty strong story about how women in a traditionally mail job had to work twice as hard to be accepted as competent, especially if gay. And to top it off, there's a burgeoning romance sub-plot between two women, one gay and the other in a straight relationship who becomes interested in the gay women.
Tori Hunter is the veteran homicide cop who is also a lesbian, and doesn't hide it. She can't get along with a male partner though. Along comes Samantha, a beautiful girl (what else, can't have an ugly girl, can we...) from a different department who has just transferred into homicide and is partnered up with Hunter.
Samantha is straight, has a boyfriend, and really wants to fit into homicide, but she also runs into the various anti-woman characters. As their partnership forms, Sam realizes she's got feelings for Hunter, and the rest goes along rather predictably. Then, the murder gets interesting, and the relationship becomes background, then the relationship becomes primary, and the murder gets interesting, and so on and so forth.
It actually made for a pretty darn good book, beyond some of the predictability. Let me stress, only the relationship issues were predicable, and a bit tiring at times, honestly. I mean, seriously: dump the guy Sam, and go with your heart, already, would you? Don't worry about him. He's a typical shallow guy. He'll find another girl and be fine. Quit worrying about him and worry about you.
Message is finally received and the bad guy is pursued and finally caught, which is the more interesting part of the story. The guys in the unit are impressed, and as the sun sets, all is well.
Pretty good book. No sordid sex scenes, which I appreciated, given the tendencies of many "romance" novels these days, and a pretty good murder mystery.

Was loving it until THAT scene
**MAJOR SPOILER ALERT**
This book was an absolutely riveting ride that I was enjoying the heck out of until the author decided to throw in a COMPLETELY unnecessary and graphic rape scene which came out of nowhere and added no value to the plot, after which there was only the briefest of recovery periods (I’m talking a matter of days) before the character is back to normal and, more distressingly, enjoying an active sex life. I’m truly disgusted. Sexual violence against women as a throw away plot device that’s supposed to sub for “character development” is in my opinion the fastest way to cheapen a story. I ended up returning the book and getting my credit back without bothering to finish it. I usually love Gerri books, but honestly, shame on you, Ms. Hill.

This story's really solid. I didn't like it quite as much as Keepers of the Cave, but it's got a really fun mystery and the dynamics between all the characters is really fun. Also, the coming out experience from Sam's POV was pretty cool.
Mostly I just wanted to point out some trigger warnings; the murder scenes in this book are pretty horrific, sexual violence is a consistent theme throughout the entire story, there's a pretty long and graphic rape scene that is brought up on a regular basis for the rest of the story. There's also pretty consistent, aggressive homophobia throughout the story, and there's a trans character (one of the murder victims) who faces consistent posthumous misgendering and transphobia even from the main characters who, frankly, should know better.
None of that makes this a bad story, just... set your expectations accordingly.

Great storyline and intrigue
Very good characters, easy to follow ,good story telling both by the author and the narrator. Could've gone on for more hours. I am ready for the sequels . The actual sex scenes were appropriate and touching and hot, but it screamed of reality and I like that. Lots of hours to listen to and pass the time .I never got bored or confused at where things were going -not once!

Something For Everyone
Part Romance/ part Police Procedural/ Part Gay Rights document/ declaration . Okay our central figure is an out lesbian who is too wild, too reckless, too uncontrollable but who always manages to get the job done. So what is it with all mystery/detective novelists feeling that the only way to write a lead character is to pattern him/her after Martin Riggs of the Lethal Weapon series. It seems as if all entertainment mediums want the solo iconoclast who breaks all the rules, doesn't care about procedure, rules, or working well with others as their main character. In reality these types are for the most part are the screw-ups who make messes that others have to clean up; they're also the ones most likely to injure themselves or others with their special brand of hot dogging. Then they're the female leads who move back and forth from kickass pros to simpering Pauline's being tied to the railroad tracks by the dastardly Snidely Whiplash. No matter the background or training of these woman they will at least once, usually more, become simpering ninnies in a crisis situation. Thankfully what Gerri Hill lacks in the ability to write police, action-adventure scenes she makes up in the ability to create really good female to female relationships. As cliche ridden as romance novels are, it is the ability to create relationships between characters that drive these stories and makes Romance the best selling fiction genre; so suspend disbelief and enjoy the ride.

Very satisfying use of a credit
Abby Craden's terrific narration takes a good romance/police procedural and turns it into a very compelling and satisfying use of a credit.
