Summary

Eigentlich ist Evelyn Waugh bekannt für seine bissigen Satiren auf die aristokratischen Kreise seiner Zeit. Doch das ungewöhnliche Leben der Kaiserin Helena, Mutter Konstantins des Großen, die enormen Konflikte dieser Zeit, ihre Pilgerreise nach Palästina und die politischen Intrigen des imperialistischen Roms inspirierten ihn zu einem fesselnden Geschichtsroman. Waugh war erst Maler, dann Lehrer, Reporter und Kunsttischler, bis er in der Literatur seine Berufung fand. Seinen historischen wie geistreichen Abstecher in die Frühzeit des Christentums liest Walter Hilsbecher.
