Summary

Fat Gay Vegan is exactly what he says in the name - he's fat, he's gay and he's vegan. But for a word that's grown so popular, what does being vegan actually mean?

The vegan community has grown hugely in the last decade but is surrounded by questions of ethics, of community, of celebrity food fads and spurious health claims. For the last seven years, Fat Gay Vegan has been a voice that cuts through the fuss and the fads and calling bullshit wherever he finds it. Now, he brings together his story and those of others in the vegan community to answer to the questions both vegans and nonvegans alike might have:

  • Why should I be vegan in the first place?
  • Does not being vegan mean I'm a bad person?
  • What should my friends and family do...and are they bad people?
  • Do I need to be a gym bunny to be worthy of veganism? (answer: no)
  • Can I still eat junk food if I'm vegan? (answer: definitely yes!)

In Sean's own words: When a wave of realisation swamps you and you come to learn how incredibly simple and sensible choosing veganism is, you'll have me sitting up there in your head like a friendly, fat uncle whispering, 'I knew you could do it'. The day will arrive when you proclaim, 'Hey, if that fat gay guy can do it, so can I!'

Packed with personal stories and nonpreachy advice, this is a compassionate, no-nonsense guide to veganism from one of the community's biggest celebrities.

Clearly I'm not "Vegan"

I didn't know anything about Sean, his blog or any of his other work. I'd never even heard of "Fat Gay Vegan" ... but the title and subtitle grabbed me and so off I went.

The main thing I came away with is that clearly I'm not "Vegan" as my motives are different to his. Perhaps it was because his views differed from mine, but it felt like over and over I was hearing, "you're not a vegan unless you..." (e.g. do it for animal welfare, not environmental issues) (I felt more judged or shamed than inspired.) So I guess for me it's confirmed that I need to call myself 'plant based' so other vegans don't think I'm not living up to the name, and so other people don't make assumptions about my views based of the word 'Vegan'.

That being said, he had some links to some good resources and it's always nice to hear about people walking a similar path. And if you are a Vegan then I'm sure this will resound soundly with you! It just wasn't my cup of tea.

Fantastic, educational and fun

I came across this book as I am veggie and thought being vegan was too much of a stretch for me but this book has opened my eyes about a lot of things and given me lots of info about taking the next step. A great listen that I highly recommend.

doesn't work

My son is a vegan and I admire his choices.Wanted to learn more and thought this maybe interesting. However gave up mid way.Sean starts off chummy chummy in his introduction and you hope for an objective account but then he starts to get holier than though and it feels like you are been lectured at constantly rather than being given a balanced viewpoint. If you want to do this then there are other mechanisms than writing a book and charging people for the privilege of being lectured at.

Militant and Pretentious

No wonder vegans have a bad rep for going overboard; "Don't call a doughnut 'sexy' or 'naughty' because it's a form of oppression" ??? ha ha ha get a grip Sean. As much as I think veganism is great, I do think this book is a bit much.

Newbie

I have recently become more interested in becoming vegan or at least mostly plant based. I found this book informative and easy to digest. Thanks Sean!

Started off good.....

...but then became too preachy, verging on militant. I now feel my steps towards veganism are futile and it might have set me back.

Inspirational and motivating

As a newly converted vegan, I found this book very inspirational and motivating, answering a lot of questions I had unanswered. I provides lots of encouragement, information and ideas on many aspects of life as a vegan and culinary recipes or tips. It is eye opening and presents veganism as a kind way of life in today’s society.

Honest, sensitive and a generous dashof humour

My third listen (I did understand it the first time🤣🤣) and stands testament to how much I enjoyed it the first and second time. Have a listen - it's bright and funny, sensitive, informative and fresh.

Inspiring, encouraging, informative and bloody good!

What more can I add really... Intelligent and thought provoking. As I’ve only been vegan a couple of months, this book really helped me and showed me the bigger picture (even bigger than I thought it was!). Read and written with wit and knowledge. Totally recommend!
