Summary
Haïta is a young shepherd who has lived all his life in a green valley at the foot of the mountains, keeping his flock, honouring the god Hastur and asking nothing more than the days bring.
One evening a beautiful maiden appears beside him on the hillside, and stays only as long as he asks her no questions. The moment he wants to know her name, or to keep her, or to be certain she will return, she vanishes. Again and again he tries to hold her, and each time his grasping drives her away. Only an old hermit in a cave can tell him who she is.
First published in 1891, Haïta the Shepherd is one of Ambrose Bierce’s gentlest and most haunting pieces: a parable in the manner of an ancient myth, about the one thing that cannot be pursued without being lost. It is also the story that first gave the world the name Hastur, later borrowed by Robert W. Chambers and H.P. Lovecraft.
