Story
Navy SEAL Ian Dunn went rogue in a big way when he turned his talents to a lawless life of jewel heists and con jobs - or so the world has been led to believe. In reality, the former Special Ops warrior is still fighting for good, leading a small band of freelance covert operatives who take care of high-stakes business in highly unofficial ways. That makes Ian the hands-down choice when the US government must breach a heavily guarded embassy and rescue a pair of children kidnapped by their own father, a sinister foreign national willing to turn his kids into casualties.

Summary
In her sizzling, award-winning novels of suspense, best-selling author Suzanne Brockmann delves into the adrenaline-rushed world of counterterrorism - and taps into the real passions of its brave men and women. In Gone Too Far she spins a story of action, intrigue, and romance as a US Navy SEAL and an FBI agent race to unravel a mystery while confronting their unresolved feelings for each other.
In his career as one of America's elite warriors, Lieutenant Sam Starrett can do no wrong. In his private life, Sam - the king of one-night stands - has done little right. Now, he's waiting for a divorce and determined to stay active in his young daughter's life. But when Sam shows up at the door of his ex-wife's home in Sarasota, Florida, he makes a grisly discovery. His daughter is gone, and a woman lies brutally murdered on the floor.
FBI agent Alyssa Locke's relationship with Sam has been overwhelmingly intense and nearly catastrophic, yet it refuses to end. The last time she saw Sam was six months earlier, when they worked together to stop terrorists from assassinating the president. Much to her dismay, Alyssa is assigned to lead the murder investigation, and once again the two are face-to-face. When explosive information surfaces linking Sam to the still-unsolved assassination plot, the stakes are raised. With her reputation on the line and her loyalties in question, Alyssa is faced with an impossible dilemma: arrest a man she believes to be innocent or risk her career.
While Alyssa tries to fight their intense attraction, Sam is determined to heat things up once again. And the complex case pushes them both to the wrong side of the law - and on the run to discover the truth. As more agents step into the chase, and with Sam's daughter still unaccounted for, neither Alyssa nor Sam can predict just how deadly hot this situation is about to become.

Great story, awful readers
I was really into the story but just could not get past the performance. The male reader read every word overly enthusiastic and enunciated. Every word. He made inflections in words that shouldn't be there. I tried to ignore his performance and just get into the story but he took lines that should be spoken slowly and softly and yelled them in weird pitches. I started to become annoyed at the characters and the way they were being portrayed. I couldn't finish it. I'll have to get a paper copy so I can finish the story.

I Miss the Previous Narrator
If you could sum up Gone Too Far in three words, what would they be?
Typically great story.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Cannot select just one great character, as that is Brockmann's specialty - developing realistic, complex characters. She is able to endear her readers to even her most flawed characters (Mary Lou). Isn't that what the real world is like? Most people have redeeming qualities, and major weaknesses.
What didn’t you like about Patrick Lawlor and Melanie Ewbank ’s performance?
Melanie Ewbank - she just read the story. A good narrator performs the story, so you forget it is being read. Sam no longer had a great Southern drawl, and the other characters sounded pretty similar. For the price of an audio-book, I believe the reading should be a performance (and fortunately, they usually are).
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I enjoyed the Sam/Alyssa interplay, Gina's confidence and maturity in dealing with Max, Mary Lou's development and growth, and the back story of Noah's parents. Brockmann's weaving in of WWII stories is masterful.
Any additional comments?
Usual Brockmann great story, but the female narrator is ... not great (sorry, not trying to be mean). I listened to all of the Troubleshooter stories some years ago, and it seems that they re-recorded them with new narrators. I still have some of the originals, so I enjoy them, but the others came from the library, and I can no longer get with the old narrators. Sigh. Guess I'll have to read them if I want to continue the series a second time around!

Worth the wait
I've been looking forward to Sam and Alyssa's story for ages. Brockmann did not disappoint. It had everything I love about Sam and Alyssa, a continuation of Max and Gina, some Tom and Kelly and tons of excitement. If I had to have one complaint though it would be that at times there was too much going on in the story, too many POVs. Usually the side WWII story adds to the plot but not so much this time. I found myself getting annoyed when the main story, which was pretty exciting, would get interrupted to go back in time. I think it would have been better to leave it out this time. Anyway, I still loved the story and would recommend it to any Brockmann fan and especially to a Troubleshooters series fan. It's a must read for the series.

Long
I love a good developed story but the back and forth between today and 20 years ago just slowed down the story in my opinion. I think an abridged version of the story would be better. Also I have to agree with others that the male narrator especially was way too excited through the entire book. It was hard to just sit back and relax and listen to the story because there was a little inflection… It was just completely over the top.

I almost gave up on the book. It was hard to follow the different character voices once the narrators switched. I like the story and I was very interested in the series until I listened. Better off reading it vs listening. Disappointed.

Great story, bad narration
Gone Too Far has been a favorite book for well over 15 years. I was so excited to listen to the audio version, but the narration is terrible.
