Summary

In the highly anticipated sequel to her New York Times best seller, Etched in Sand, Regina Calcaterra pairs with her youngest sister, Rosie, to tell Rosie's harrowing yet ultimately triumphant story of childhood abuse and survival.

They are five kids with five different fathers and an alcoholic mother who leaves them to fend for themselves for weeks at a time. Yet through it all, they have each other. Rosie, the youngest, is fawned over and shielded by her older sister, Regina. Their mother, Cookie, blows in and out of their lives "like a hurricane, blind and uncaring to everything in her path".

But when Regina emancipates herself as a minor and escapes, her siblings are separated. And as Rosie discovers after Cookie kidnaps her from foster care, the one thing worse than being abandoned by her mother is living in Cookie's presence. Beaten physically, abused emotionally, and forced to labor at the farm where Cookie settles in Idaho, Rosie refuses to give in. Like her sister, Regina, Rosie has an unfathomable strength in the face of unimaginable hardship - enough to propel her out of Idaho and out of a nightmare.

Filled with maturity and grace, Rosie's memoir continues the compelling story begun in Etched in Sand - a shocking yet profoundly moving testament to sisterhood and indomitable courage.

A story that reached every emotion i have...

Any additional comments?

I have listened to both sister's books and come away a bit ashamed to consider my own life challenges as quite as difficult as before. The ability to survive not only in tact but to have come as far as these sisters and brother have...and with the willingness to share their story has changed my heart forever and i am blessed to have listened to both books.

Needed a different person reading aloud

Having the subject of the story as the audible author was a mistake. She offered no emotional value to the story and the reading was horrible. It was miserable to get though this audio book because of this. The story was fine, but included way too many details that didn’t support the actual story. Do yourself a favor and read the paper version instead of trying to get through this audio version.

Amazing!

I loved this book. Rosie is a resilient young girl who overcame a heartbreaking childhood. I read the book once and listened to it twice. So we'll written and do well read. Everyone needs to listen to this book atleast once.

There is no greater strength ....

Than that of child's will . This book allows us to see there is hope and strength in every child. As a mother it helps you to know that loving your child is the greatest gift you can give them. As a person this book allows you to heal with Rosie and know that some of our struggles pale in comparison; it will change your day your week and for me many days beyond that. Thank you Rosie

Emotionally moving

I'm feeling so many emotions over hearing this gut wrenching true story. I truly despise the monsters who treat children this way. You and your siblings are a blessing. I'm so very sorry for what happened to you and your siblings. You all deserved so much better. I began listening to your sisters story about half way through our 12 hour drive to Colorado on July 1st. I began listening to your story on our way back. These were the first audio books I had ever experienced. The story was well told to the point that I felt like I was right there with you. 5 stars all the way.

Moving memoir

After finishing Etched in Sand by Rosie's sister Regina Calcaterra, I missed the stories of the five children I'd come to know. They are sad stories, but the love and perseverance shared by these siblings is so powerful, it left me yearning for more. Rosie delivers as she tells her stories of hurricane Cookie. My heart still aches for this family. I'm moved by the friendships that carried Rosie through and led her to be a loving mother. What a beautiful legacy Rosie and her siblings have created by breaking the cycle.

The secrets that shouldn't be kept.

Story helped me to see other people's stories in a way that I felt less sad about my own similar childhood.

Incredible.... Infinite blessings to the author!

For anyone whose suffered abuse from those who were supposed to love and protect them; this is a story for you. I was shocked. I laughed at the innocence of the world thru a child's eyes. I was astonished at the strength of the human spirit. I am grateful for the opportunity to hear another survivor's path to freedom & love. Her story has helped me understand myself, my life, struggles & successes. A true lesson in love, faith, and hope for a better future for the next generation. 💕

Amazingly told an narrated

Thank you to the family for sharing their stories thank you for sharing how love can keep strong even in distance and it takes one person to anchor you and one day at a time we can walk through hell and become more than a statistic.

Unbelievably Strong Woman and Story

So touching and emotional as the author tells her own life story and what she endured.
