Summary

From out of the shadows of the Silent War, a hero emerges. Clad all in grey, an errant warrior of the Legiones Astartes kneels before the Regent of Terra, and accepts a solemn new duty - Battle-Captain Garro, once commander of the Eisenstein, now Agentia Primus of Malcador the Sigillite.

From the desolation of Isstvan to the halls of the Imperial Palace itself, he stands as a paragon of loyalty and protector of the innocent, ever ready to strike back at the traitorous allies of the Warmaster. But Garro is walking a path of his own, one that may lead him to question his own place in the Imperium...and what if he, too, should falter?

This audiobook contains James Swallow's complete saga of Nathaniel Garro in the Horus Heresy - the audio drama series is embellished and expanded in prose, with additional scenes to represent the author's original vision. This all serves as prelude to the events of the novella Vow of Faith, bringing Garro closer to his inescapable destiny as the first true martyr of the Lectitio Divinitatus.

Critic reviews

" Garro is not a collection of short stories - it's James Swallow's full novelisation of Nathaniel Garro's story arc, something we've previously only seen (in part) in the audio dramas and novella. There are new and extended scenes, whole new chapters in fact, making this just about the most definitive exploration of the founding of the Knights Errant, and everything that comes after...." (Laurie Goulding, The Horus Heresy series editor)

Enjoyable story arc

I am home carer and my duties have increased by 500% during this Lockdown.

Being able to listen to some of my favourite 40k stories whilst spending hours travelling between vulnerable peoples homes has been a god sent.

Garro was already a great character and this audio book does him justice.

Recommended.

My first Black Library audio book

I've read many from the Horus Heresy but this was my first audio book from the series. After much deliberating which book to pick first I'm extremely glade Garro was my first. A must for anyone interested in the 40K world.

Another great W40k audio book with Garro

Garro - if the emperor had another 10 of him, Horus and the terror god's would have his under a large plant pot! Showing his character, judgement and thoughtfulness, Garro is put in numerous positions that shoe him for the man he is.

Spoiled by

Struggled to finish. I found myself just getting into the story when the main character would act or speak in a way that just didn't make sense. Instead of just stating he was a loyalist on a mission, he would attempt to command other space marines to lower weapons, join him etc without saying who he was and who he worked for. Found it so annoying that gave up. I'm sure some people won't be bothered by this, and will be able to really enjoy a lot of the good points of the book, especially Toby Longworth's excellent narration, but it was just too frustrating for me.

Gripping and well narrated

I admit that I prefer the fully-cast versions, but Toby Longwirth is superb as a one man ensemble. The story itself is massive, as it would be given that it's part of what has to be one of the most epically-scaled sagas in modern literature, but it is nuanced and holds the attention well. The protagonist is one of the best written that I've encountered in this genre.

Malcador the completely different

The book is decent, but the thing that epidemice My dislike for this book is how much malcador act differently then in every book that comes before it... He has always been depicted as jovial and wise, sure he was ruthless enough to found the assassinorium, but he never showed rage or callusnes, and he always found a use for those Who remained loyal to the throne... Yet in this he kills loyal servent, nd plans the murder of even more loyal souls, and when garro shows the tenacity to unravel one of malcadors secrets which looked like a traitor plot, malcador punishes him instead of seeing it as the skill and loyalt to the throne that it was.... So yeah characers in this book grates against how they have been shown in the past...

Great Anthology of Garro stories.

Great set of books about the legendary Garro. Shows Garro's growth from Malcador's puppet to true believer of the Imperial Creed.

A battle book.

Was unable to finish the book, I'm not interested in hearing 12hours of battle scenes descriptions with a hint of story on top.

Garro

Garro is an awesome character. Haven't found myself this invested in a character in any other HH books since Loken from the first few books. Loken may or may not be mentioned in this one at some point...
