Summary
Alex Verus faces his dark side in this return to the best-selling urban fantasy series about a London-based mage.
To protect his friends, Mage Alex Verus has had to change - and embrace his dark side. But the life mage Anne has changed too and made a bond with a dangerous power. She's going after everyone she's got a grudge against - and it's a long list.
In the meantime, Alex has to deal with his arch-enemy, Levistus. The Council's death squads are hunting Alex as well as Anne, and the only way for Alex to stop them is to end his long war with Levistus and the Council, by whatever means necessary. It will take everything Alex has to stay a step ahead of the Council and stop Anne from letting the world burn.

The narrator forgets his voices
I love the narrator crisp and clear and have enjoyed the different character voices over the years of listening to the books. But in the last few he has forgotten and changed the characters voices, ie Levistus, he used to have a sickly smooth voice and this has distinctly changed in this book, same for Morden. It sounds picky but makes a difference.

Alex Verus series
I am a listener/reader of a lot of supernatural series. I have really grown into this series and this book has developed the main character considerably. I really enjoyed the book and it certainly left me ready for the next one but I can’t help feeling it could of been a few chapters longer moving us towards the challenges to come.
Still a good instalment into the series though and you can see the very core changes to the lead characters mindset.

Wow just brilliant! What a fantastic series *****
Totally gripping , the narrator is astounding , I listen to so many books but this series is above & beyond! Mr Jacka please write faster!!

Fantastic
I really though the author had painted himself into a corner in this series but this book blows the narrative wide open again! Alex finds direction and the book starts to truly wrestle with the realities of the council's authority.

a thing of beauty is a joy forever
I wish all the books I'm interested in were narrated by Gildart Jackson.
Benedict Jacka had chosen well. Reading his books is a joy but listening to them wow. Second maybe third best in the series.
I have listened to the last one as well and I can't wait for the new series.
