A joy to listen to, even if you don’t know the first thing about poker.
This is one of several book written by Victoria, and I hope it’s not the only one brought to life by her narration.
You may have seen her on TV, a popular guest on panel shows along with hosting Only Connect. Maybe you’ve heard her radio shows such as Women Talking About Cars or Heresy. Whatever opinion you may have formed about Victoria, prepare to be enlightened and enriched by this snippet of her life.
I read the book in order to learn a little of the woman who had the exceptional taste to marry David Mitchell. It left me moved to tears at times, and aching belly laughs at others. Hearing her narrate her work, so many years on from its original publication, brought an extra depth as you can hear her smile as she relives the events she wrote about so long ago.
No spoilers, but this bite sized slice of Victoria’s life just left me longing for her to fill in the gaps. The more I learn, the more I am exposed to the hidden depths of this joyful, witty, intelligent and beautiful human being.
Give your ears and soul a treat and listen to this book. You may even decide that it was David who displayed the greatest of taste by marrying such a smart and passionate person.

Exactly as you’d expect
I’m a huge fan of the author. This is a very engaging, well written (very well read), entertaining story about the love of poker and the life that goes with it. Really enjoyed it - but I expected to.

Perfectly pitched story
Victoria has a voice I could listen to easily if she was only describing her favourite white paint but luckily she gives us the back story about her love of poker, a game which I love as well. The story is told well and has enough humour and pathos in equal measure.

Can’t recommend this audiobook highly enough
I loved this book and Victoria Coren Mitchell’s narration really sparkled. I didn’t understand half of it (not being a poker player) but that didn’t matter, Victoria’s clear love of poker and the language shone through and enhanced the feeling of being allowed a peek into a different world. What a treat!

Breathtakingly honest
funny, honest, kind about friend and foe alike. I know many of the characters from the Vic and their fond portrayals made me smile. I was at the table in Holland Casinos when the Dutch man made his comment about remembering his youth. Curiously I can still remember his face and the entire scene with Vicky playing poker, chatting and drinking tea whilst writing a coluumn to meet a fast approaching deadline on her pre smartphone phone. Oh and great poker advice here too without being preachy.

Enjoyable page turner, well read.
Enjoyable page turner, well read. The book revolves around poker as expected and had a tonne of interesting stories. I loved the insights into the late night poker TV series, Victoria really brings the characters to life in the book. I really laughed at the talk about the draw hand AKs, as I played a big all in hand at Pokerstars versus the author in a $2100 buy in game. I had AKs in the small blind, Victoria TT and I hit the K on the flop and that held up for me ;-) ..... AKs always wins, well 1/2 the time anyways, Great book, give it a try,,,
