About this listen

The Iron Prince will claim his crown.

Reidon Ward's first semester at the Galens Institute hasn't been without reward. In just over half a year he's gone from the weakest cadet at school to one of the strongest in his class, and there's no one left who would argue that his Device, Shido, isn't the most terrifying CAD they've ever laid eyes on. Still, Rei knows that his climb has barely begun, like he knows that the true fight is only just starting.

After all… The Sectionals tournament has arrived.

Rei, along with Aria, Viv, Catcher, and a couple unexpected squadmates, are about to face the first real battle of their careers. Squaring off with some of the best Users in the Astra System, they're going to have to put everything they have—as individuals and as a team—into their coming fights if they want to ultimately end up standing at the top. As ever, though, their journey is hardly bound to be a smooth one.

Especially not when Rei and Aria begin to suspect that Shido may be even more formidable than it appears, much less as the powerful entities who've already taken notice of the 'Iron Prince of Galens' begin to make their moves, some casting their hands in his favor, others very much against…

You wont be dissapointed with book two. Truly enjoyed every minute and cant wait for the next one. If i had to nitpick i would say one or two moments strayed towards current issues, just a mention or throwaway comment really, which i personally dislike to find in any fantasy novel and the narrator needs to lock down Arias accent. I feel like it strays from Irish to French to Indian and back again.

Firstly, who doesn't love a tournament arc. Secondly, the personal growth of all characters is great. They all experience some sort of emotional and physical growth which is good to see.

Thirdly, the twist!! Oh my! I can wait for book 3!

Talk about epic storytelling!

This is an exceptional story part of an exceptional series. Dying for the next one already and will continue to relisten and reread this version. The voice acting always is unreal and totally immersive. The plot and story telling is totally on another level. Favourite series ever!

Phenomenal all round

Cognition: Adequate...
Will to resist: Severely lacking...

Iron Prince was something of a pleasant surprise discovered during a reading resurgence during the pandemic and I'd been waiting somewhat impatiently for this instalment ever since.

Well, what can I say - if you enjoyed the first book, this one continues to deliver in spades. Plenty of world building, lots of character development and back story discovery (along with a redemption arc?) along with the ever-present hints about what the future will hold via the little quotes in each chapter.

Two thumbs way, way up for Bryce O'Connor and this series - just hoping book three is delivered via an increased speed spec...

Oh, and Luke Daniels is fantastic as always.

About time...

The good:

- Continuation of an amazing story.
- Interesting side characters
- Outstanding performance
- Story doesn't needlessly rush through the ranks

The bad:

- Serious power creep, low stakes.
- Aimless progression.
- Overly streched emotional conversations. Father this, mother that.. just keeps on going.
- Uninspired filler content
- MC figuring out complex plots in an instant with 0 imformation or previous engagement with the topic

i would still recommend this book if you enjoyed the foundation of the first installment.

What I'm hoping for the next book:

- Clear book end goal from the start
- Back to underdog arc
- Clever / Smart / Brilliant moves that misfire or are misinformed / manipulated
- More focus on creative problem solving
- No hats, dates or sticking it up to the bully

Great world, serious flaws
