Summary

Why Mummy Drinks is the brilliant novel from Gill Sims, the author of the online sensation Peter and Jane.

It is Mummy's 39th birthday. She is staring down the barrel of a future of people asking if she wants to come to their advanced yoga classes and polite book clubs where everyone claims to be tiddly after a glass of Pinot Grigio and says things like 'oooh gosh, are you having another glass?'

But Mummy does not want to go quietly into that good night of women with sensible haircuts who 'live for their children' and stand in the playground trying to trump each other with their offsprings' extracurricular activities and achievements and boasting about their latest holidays.

Instead, she clutches a large glass of wine, muttering 'FML' over and over again. Until she remembers the gem of an idea she's had....

LOL

Eleventy billion reasons to listen to this book! I was only able to snatch 15 minutes each time to listen to the audio but that was enough to send me off with a giggle or smile.

It can happen to anyone

A good listen, definitely give it a try

Badly cast narrator

I felt that the narrator spoilt would could have been a good book. The protagonist is in her 30s - the narrator sounded like a woman more in her 50s-60s. Her voice just didn’t gel with the story line at all.

The story itself was quite fun - but at times I wondered when it was going to actually get started. Not a huge amount happened, although the author did hit the nail on the head many times with her observations of modern mummy life - which is really what enabled me to keep interested in this book.

Really Naff - Dull

I had such high hopes for this - I love the FB page. I'm a full time middle class working Mum - I hoped this book was for me. It was not.

This is basically a re-run of the FB page, made to be a story, which has no real story line and is complete nonsense.

It's starts funny but it's a repeat of the same old stuff and gets boring not exciting. It's ends up being complete rubbish of drunken middle class dribble. The story line with the Eco Sister is horrific and so far fetched.

The book made me want to scream "stand up for yourself woman" about 100 times. You need a bottle of wine to get through one chapter.

Truly a Laugh-Out-Loud Experience

Let me preface my review by noting that the author pulls no punches when it comes to extremely "salty" language. So this novel probably is not for the faint of heart. For everyone else ... read on!

I have very high standards when it comes to humor. TV shows, books written by comedians, my husband ... the exceptions are few and far between. When I read reviews promising laughs galore, I'm skeptical.

So, Why Mummy Drinks is a rare and precious find. I actually not only laugh out loud - a lot - but even throw my head back to do so, every now and then. The narrator's interpretation, pacing, and deadpan delivery, are simply tailor-made for this novel.

Because the author is British, many of her expressions and expletives are not commonly used here in the US ... but they are simply spot-on and I long to incorporate them into my own salty repertoire.

Ms Sims takes stock characters - perfect moms, latter-day hippies, intrusive relatives - to the next level. And her writing style is a treat, as well - the phraseology, the similes, etc - are delightful.

In short - if you are a free spirit with a sense of humor, this Bud is for you!

Very Funny!

Would you listen to Why Mummy Drinks again? Why?

Absolutely. It was just that funny to me. And i don't even drink.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Ellen. I think we (mothers) think like her we just don't say it. And she loves her dog - what could be better?

What does Gabrielle Glaister bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She did an excellent job with the voices.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Not sure.

Any additional comments?

I never review books but I felt I had to with this one as i very much enjoyed this book. If you enjoy British comedy DO NOT let this book pass you by. I laughed out loud many times while driving down the road.

Had me absolutely laughing out loud

First of all the performance was the best I have ever heard. It added to the book tremendously. Her inflections were so on point, I can’t say enough about it.

Ellen has things we can all relate to but I wish we could hang out. So. Much. Yes she does make some bad choices and can be a tad on the selfish side, but I still love to her story.

This book is nothing deep but if you want a fun, relatable read that will make you howl then don’t hesitate to buy this book!
