Summary

They only know their enemy as Accursed.

When Roan agrees to join the Serpents on a heist in the city of Esmeraldi, she expects it to go smoothly. Nothing could have been further from the truth. On the run for her life, she'll need to deceive soldiers, generals, and inquisitors of her identity and gender. It's illegal for a woman to be a soldier, after all.

Before long, she dives right into the hands of her pursuers, hiding in plain sight. At least Roan isn't facing down the Accursed in their mountain strongholds, hundreds of kilometers to the north...

In Legacy of Light, you witnessed the story of Ermo as she freed her people from the iron grip of the Holy Empire. In Enemies of Light, witness the war through the eyes of the other side. Not everything is as it seems.

An amazing story

The book is excellent and well narrated. The story follows the main character as she flees the city after a botched robbery. She faces adversity and her view of the world is challenged. My only complaint is the shortness of the book.

Who or what is the enemy really?

‘Enemies of Light’ is the second book in ‘The Compendium’ series and continues the story of the conflict between the Holy Empire and the People of Light. Whilst we receive some updates as to what Ermo, Daughter of Light, is up to and information she is gleaning via her journal entries, the bulk of this book centres around Roan, a young woman who is a subject of the Holy Empire. She has to go on the run after a heist gone wrong but escapes with an artifact she has picked up and is easy to conceal.

Roan hides among the Empire’s troops who are being sent to the battlefront but manages to locate her brother. With his aid, using an assumed name and pretending to be a man, she joins the Company of Slaying Swords that he commands. They are like a Guild with a Charter, paying and training their own troops outside the command of the Inquisition’s overseeing military but can receive contracts from the army. They are not allowed to fight against the Empire; if they do so then they lose their Charter and all lives are forfeit. Should they fail to fulfil any contract they have agreed to undertake for the Empire then the result is the same. Whilst they may fight for the Inquisition, they have their own code and, first and foremost, they fight for each other and protect their own.

Roan learns through first-hand experience, as well as through the testimony of others with regard to their experiences, just how cruel and treacherous the Inquisitors are. Despite coming to understand that the people of the Holy Empire have been lied to about the nature of the ‘enemy’, there is still a mission to undertake. That brings her face-to-face with Ermo.

Once again, C D Tavenor manages to successfully pack a lot of information into a short book with his highly descriptive writing. I like the fact that we have two strong female leads from different sides who now come together. Presumably we need some collaboration if a common enemy is to be defeated – the true enemy of light. Just slightly miffed that we are left with a big cliffhanger which was arrived at rather abruptly. I hope it’s not too long before the next instalment becomes available!

Alix Nicole has managed to produce quite a wide repertoire of character voices for the narration of the Audible book. A very enjoyable listen.
