About this listen

A sweeping saga that spans three continents and four decades.

K. D. Ray’s remarkable journey begins in 1931 with the death of his father, a prominent judge in India. At just eight years old, he returns to his father’s ancestral home with his mother and brother. Defying the family matriarch, his mother is cut off from the inheritance, but with the support of other family members, they settle into a modest new community. It becomes clear that education is his path to independence in a rapidly changing world.

Determined to achieve his dream of becoming a surgeon, K. D. Ray’s story takes him from India to England and Nigeria. He vividly describes the cultures and tumultuous times of each country, from WWII to India’s independence and the partition that fueled animosity between Hindus and Muslims. Along the way, he navigates a “forbidden” love.

After earning his medical degree in India, he becomes a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in London. Against the odds, he is accepted into the British Colonial Service as an officer and is assigned to Nigeria, overcoming racism and jealousy along the way. He spends a decade there, with his wife and family, witnessing Nigeria’s independence and the political turmoil that follows. He rises to the rank of senior surgeon for the whole of Northern Nigeria and is the personal physician to the local emirs and the prime minister. A man of great principle and integrity, he often clashes with British officers and other physicians who see him as a threat. Yet, his moral purpose and integrity earn him powerful allies and protectors.

His memoir is a testament to resilience, capturing the essence of a life dedicated to overcoming obstacles and making a difference across continents.
