About this listen

The old world is gone. Now, one family must endure the hellish aftermath…

Laurel is stabilizing a patient in the ER when the power goes out. When the rest of the hospital evacuates, she refuses to leave her patients behind—especially her sick mother. She’s determined to fight for their lives. Even if it means putting her own in danger…

In a remote mountain cabin hundreds of miles away, Laurel’s husband, Bear, begins a grueling trek across Minnesota. He’ll do whatever it takes to reunite his family. But it’s a dangerous journey, and he’s all alone save for his loyal dog, Jessamine, and Trent, an orphaned boy he finds along the way.

Meanwhile, their daughter Mae has joined up with a violent militia, and grapples with divided loyalties. The Militia have unearthed weapons of war that survived the EMP. And they’re ready to launch a bloody conflict that could shatter the fragile remnants of order her family has struggled to rebuild.

Bear, Laurel, and the others just want peace. But peace—and survival— won’t come without a fight.

Ooh I have immensely enjoyed listening to this series!!

It starts with a good character building, scene and world description, the two storylines of Lauren in the hospital and Bear, who’s somewhere more isolated in nature.

The author brings the storylines together in a fluent way and I found myself more and more engaged in the story as it progressed.

The narrator brought the story in a vivid and enthusiastic way!

Brilliant work!!.

These books make you think about how it might change your life if something like an emp was used and all technology around you stopped working. Not knowing what had happened and if normal life would ever resume.

I enjoyed the way the author has used different characters to explore the impact it's had on them and the range of human reactions when things go sideways.

I also enjoyed the narrator's way of presenting the books that added to my. enjoyment and I felt invested in the outcomes.

This volume gives you six books in one. Because each has its own introduction and conclusion the books which are: Broken World; Chaotic World; Dangerous World; Divided World; Collapsed World and Lawless World have all been recorded individually, but combined here to give you nearly 50 hours of immersion. Grace Hamilton has imagined the effect of a widespread electro-magnetic pulse (EMP) which has disabled all active electronic devices. The effect this has on society and lifestyle is explored through the lens of a family group centred around Lauren and Bear with younger members of the family appearing in later volumes. Concepts of family loyalty, adherence to ethical and moral principles and caring for others versus selfishness are demonstrated. The main characters are in peril from their environment and other people. The mindset of those with medical background versus military is also a central theme. You will encounter divided loyalties and conflicts of conscience as well as action scenes.
The narrator does a good job of sustaining consistent delivery of the characters and voicing them so it is clear who is talking. It helps that the chapter title is announced as this tells you whose point of view is being rendered.

This would be good if you want something relatively mindless to listen to when doing something else. I managed to finish the entire series, although the vocal mannerisms of the reader along with slightly annoying characters did make it a trek.
I've heard worse, though.
The star of the series is, of course, Jess the dog!
