A Post-Apocalyptic EMP Saga Filled With Fascinating Characters & Prepper Info

All they want is a safe haven. They’ll have to fight to get it…

Dr. Laurel Rivera, Bear and their small band of survivors have left their home, fleeing into the wilderness near Lake Superior. With children to protect, they’re forced to make ruthless choices, as they run a gauntlet of desperate survivors willing to kill for vital supplies.

Then Mae collapses.

Pregnant, feverish, and slipping fast, she needs medication Laurel doesn’t have—and can’t make. The only remaining supply belongs to another group: armed, organized, and determined to protect what’s theirs at any cost.

Stealing the medicine could ignite a war they won’t survive. Walking away will condemn Mae and her unborn child to death.

As time runs out and enemies close in, Bear and Laurel must decide how far they’re willing to go to save one life—and how many others they’re willing to damn in the name of survival.

This was such a great continuation of the series and worked so well. The way the characters have grown feels really organic and the introduction of the new characters fits well as well as the on-going back story. There are such interesting and intriguing descriptions of the scenery and locations which if I was living in the US would really make me want to go there

Great series

This is the ninth book in the series, so I'm well acquainted with the core cast and understand the threat posed by the cynical, revengeful and relentless Rossis. In the previous book, our heroes and heroines had fought off the crime family trying to steal their medical supplies and kill the person who had brought the much-needed help to the plague ridden community.

They have to move from Thunder Bay to escape the retribution as a member of the crime family was killed in the previous skirmish. This could work as a standalone, but you'd be missing out on the relationship building and significance of certain names, so better to work your way up to this one from the beginning.

They have to take to the water and find an island with suitable resources to sustain a community around the year, yet accessible enough to help those in need of the doctor's services. There is plenty of action and problem solving as well as a daring raid to gain necessary supplies for setting up the clinic and helping current members. A couple of new characters and resources are introduced and we witness a redemption arc for a previously encountered character. Prepper and survival skills are taught almost subliminally through descriptions of the problems and their solutions. They come across desperate people as well as being desperate in wanting finding a home in which to quietly live and grow. A gripping and satisfying read.

The narrator is excellent in rendering male and female voices in a distinctive and appropriate way.
