Summary

BuzzFeed Greatest Fantasy Book of the Year author

In his magnificent, heroic adventure fantasy, Dragonslayer, Duncan M. Hamilton debuts the first audiobook in a fast-moving trilogy: a dangerous tale of lost magics, unlikely heroes, and reawakened dragons.

Once a member of the king's personal guard, Guillot dal Villevauvais spends most days drinking and mourning his wife and child. He’s astonished - and wary - when the Prince Bishop orders him to find and destroy a dragon. He and the Prince Bishop have never exactly been friends, and Gill left the capital in disgrace five years ago. So why him? And, more importantly, how is there a dragon to fight when the beasts were hunted to extinction centuries ago by the ancient Chevaliers of the Silver Circle?

On the way to the capitol city, Gill rescues Solène, a young barmaid, who is about to be burned as a witch. He believes her innocent...but she soon proves that she has plenty of raw, untrained power, a problem in this land, where magic is forbidden. Yet the Prince Bishop believes magic will be the key to both destroying the dragon and replacing the young, untried king he pretends to serve with a more pliable figurehead.

Between Gill’s rusty swordsmanship and Solene’s unstable magic, what could go wrong?

Here Be Dragons!

Dragonslayer kicks off a new fantasy trilogy from Duncan M Hamilton and it does it in his usual style. It's a well-paced story that immediately engages as we see the perspective of the dragon as well as those of Guillot and Solène. This gives it a nice symmetry and colours the moral dilemmas that the book introduces.

I do think it's fair to say that those who like a lot of detailed world-building or detailed magic system design are unlikely to be satisfied with this. It's all about the plot, the story and the characters which makes it fairly light on the old grey matter and easy to speed through at a rate of knots quite comfortably. I personally like a broad variety of styles, maybe that means I am easily pleased, but every so often I like to be told a good old-fashioned story and this is what Hamilton does. It stays fresh and I liked Guillot's down to earth nobility in particular.

I think this is the talent of an author like Hamilton. He's hooked me in with simplicity, never letting detail distract from his storyline but including what is necessary. This opener does what a good start to a series should do, it tells its own story and sets us up nicely at the end for more to come. Add to that the undoubted vocal talents of Simon Vance and you have a very enjoyable production; I will definitely be following this trilogy going forwards.

Great story

This is a fantasy adventure with hero, heroine, villain and dragon. A once famous hero, now in decline and hopefully going to redeem himself! A villain you can hate and an embittered dragon for whom one can have some sympathy. Wonderfully narrated as always by Mr. Vance. Beautifully set up for the next volume, which is in the near future thankfully. Well worth the time to listen.

Fun romp

Decent if mostly predictable novel. I was hoping the political angle would deepen, and some of the characters felt a bit one dimensional. Voice acting was not bad, there was a bit of a "stock military man" voice that got reused and confused me if I wasn't keeping track. But that's just me being picky - it was a fun listen and I'll look out for the next in the series.

Brilliant Story in true Hamilton Fashion

Having listened to other stories by Duncan I was keen to see if the quality would continue. Certainly not disappointed- that said it felt at times that the stitching together of audio had been quite hastily done and removed the natural flow of speech when reading.

Despite this, I’m very happy with the purchase and would recommend as a starter for what could be a great series.

Need the next one.

Loved this from the start. It’s books like this that make me regret giving others 5 stars at it outclasses so many of them.
Amazing story, fantastically narrated and left me pining for more.
Only negative is that the rest of the Trilogy isn’t yet released. :(

Dragons never fail..

.. To entertain!. Good book. Great characters. Not the most original taking different ideas from well worn tropes, but well written and fun. Simon Vance, as always, is fantastic.

I love this book.

I've been struggling to find a good book recently and I've returned a few so decided to try looking at books from narrator's I know I really enjoy and discovered this little beauty narrated by Simon Vance. I love books about dragons and all 3 books have the most amazing cover artwork and excellent reviews so made sense to give it a go. and I loved it. I've already downloaded books 2 and 3 for seamless listening of entire trilogy. will definitely be buying more books by Duncan M. Hamilton.

I didn't expect to love it this much

I HIGHLY recommend this book for anyone into fantasy or dragons. I usually don't enjoy books where the dragon is the bad guy, but honestly, Hamilton pulls it of PHENOMENALLY. He allows the reader to understand WHY the dragon is burning villages and killing people; he gives him character, and I love that. In addition, every character is well formulated and has a detailed backstory that allows you to understand them in a deeper way. I went out of my comfort zone a little for this one, and I made a great choice. This book is VERY well written. The only reason I have performance four stars is because some names were hard to understand, especially at first, and I didn't enjoy the voice he used when reading dialogue the main villain. However, he did a great job at making sure you knew who was talking and when and was consistent with recognizable voices for each character.

A Good listen, with a dragon, and some magic.

It has some undertones about the main character's flaws. He has let himself go and drinks to much, but he manages to beat his demons in the end. A little predictable, but I am looking forward to the 2nd book in the series.

Blah

While the narration was good, I had to force myself to finish. I try to finish almost every book I've purchased, so I did. I Had to listen again, because I couldn't remember any of the story. I now know why. Not memorable.Unfortunately I already purchased the sequel. I hope it will be better.
