Summary

You can cover up the truth, but it won’t stay buried forever.

A man is found bludgeoned to death in woodland by the village of Canwick, and the close-knit community is sent into shock. Detective Karen Hart, still haunted by the tragic loss of her husband and daughter nearby, is brought in to investigate the horrific murder.

It soon becomes clear that dark secrets lie behind Canwick’s unspoiled appearance. When Hart begins to suspect that a modern-day slavery ring has been hiding in plain sight among the villagers, she faces a race to find proof before the culprits slip from her grasp. But when key witnesses start disappearing, it’s obvious that there’s a deep-rooted conspiracy to keep prying eyes away from the truth.

But in a village where everyone knows everyone, who knows more than they are letting on - and who can Hart really trust? She’s in deep and she’s never been more alone. She must confront the tragedy of her own past if she wants to catch the killers before it’s too late. Because one thing’s for certain - there’s no turning back...

Great book series

Well written likeable characters with interesting evolving back stories and good dynamics within the team. I will be moving straight on to the next book now….

Good story but a need to suspend disbelief!

Pleeeeaaaassse sort out the accents - the Scottish one in particular!!! They are truly awful! The story is good though I found myself thinking ‘not likely’ quite often. It was easy enough to just go along with it though for the sake of a good yarn!

Absolutely brilliant.

Please don’t let this be the last in the series. This this third book of the three I have read was terrific. The characters came alive. I must also say Henrietta Meier was the narrator and is brilliant telling the story. There is so much more that can be told and I’m sure D S Butler can give us another three to enjoy.

I loved the whist and turns. I did not read the books in order but the books over lapse. Looking forward to the next book to come out in Feb 2023. The way the Narrater read the book, you became part of the story

Complex Police Procedural

A man is found bludgeoned to death in a forest, and a group of undocumented workers are found hidden in a garage. At first the cases seem unrelated are and treated as such, but DS Karen Hart has her own suspicions.

This is a complex police procedural involving people smuggling and police corruption and is told from an investigative point of view making me feel like I was one of the team trying to figure out what was going on. There were plenty of twists which kept me on my toes. We also learned more about the accident that killed Karen's husband and child.

Another great book in this detective series.... hoping there is another one

Starting to really love the characters in this series, great twists and turns to the stories. Great building of the characters that you love to hate. Really love listening to a book about my home town.
Can’t wait to listen to the next book in the series.
Ignore the bad reviews about the narrator, no, she is not perfect with her pronunciation of some local places but overall she has a nice voice to listen to and I wouldn’t want to listen to someone else narrate the book.
