Summary

We've all been there: stuck in a cycle of what-ifs, plagued by indecision, paralyzed by the fear of getting it wrong. Nobody wants to live a life of constant overthinking, but it doesn't feel like something we can choose to stop doing. It feels like something we're wired to do, something we just can't escape. But is it?

Anne Bogel's answer is no. Not only can you overcome negative thought patterns that are repetitive, unhealthy, and unhelpful, you can replace them with positive thought patterns that will bring more peace, joy, and love into your life. In Don't Overthink It, you'll find actionable strategies that can make an immediate and lasting difference in how you deal with questions both small - Should I buy these flowers? - and large - What am I doing with my life? More than a book about making good decisions, Don't Overthink It offers you a framework for making choices you'll be comfortable with, using an appropriate amount of energy, freeing you to focus on all the other stuff that matters in life.

The narration makes me sleepy...

The narration is way too quiet and slow, especially for a book I'm listening to while I'm driving. I had to keep turning the volume up until it was up as high as it could go. I have turned it off several times because I just can't take it, but then I tune in again because the subject matter is good, but then I turn it off again. I was a little irritated while listening because I was so focused on the quality of the recording and the narrator that I couldn't focus on the content of the book. Good content, but, also warning you if you're thinking of purchasing.

Great book!! But next time.....

This is a great book, and I will apply the author’s advice in a number of ways. I love that she reads as if she’s sharing this information to a friend. There’s one aspect of her reading that I didn’t enjoy. She speaks as if she doesn’t want to wake the baby or something....speaking beneath her breath, just short of a whisper. I heard her interview on the Typology podcast, and she did not speak that way on there. She was full voiced and easy to hear. I’ll look forward to hearing other books, but I’d prefer the Typology interview version of her voice. Great content!

Absolutely worth it - I’m buying the physical book next

Maybe it’s my Enneagram 9 that attracted me to the title and the Wing 1 that almost kept me from buying it (reviews complained about the narrator’s voice) but I’m so glad the 9 in me ruled out. The book is so spot on with the way I think that I told my husband to read it so he can understand my silence (it doesn’t mean I’m mad - it means I’m thinking). I’m so glad the author called out the problem with overthinking and provided plenty of solutions to create better habits around it. This is the book I’m buying for my close girlfriends.

Great thoughts to think about not overthinking

Anne provides great examples of overthinking and though I know that I am an over thinker, I never realized it was so much so. She also provides great suggestions to de-clutter your mind / free up mind space. I don’t agree with them all (clothing choices), but the point was to provide options so readers / listeners could choose how to simplify life by eliminating decisions. It’s also nice to know that others out there share in the trap of overthinking.

Why is she whispering?

I discovered this author from a podcast and was drawn in by her personality, which really doesn’t come across in this book. I usually enjoy books read by the author, but in this case, I hated it. Compared to her normal conversational voice, it seems like she’s whispering and using a weird, placating tone. I couldn’t even finish the book because I found it so distracting.

torture

Couldn't finish it was so bad. Creepy voice and super boring. I'd confess to just about anything if I was forced to finish this. Absolute torture.

This book helps with matters big and small!

I found this audio very easy to listen to and actually did not want to put it down.I gained at least one concept in each chapter that could be applied to much larger matters that we face in life. My wife is now reading the book. I definitely recommend!

No scriptures to follow through on her thoughts.

I loved her demeanor in her reading. her calming vouce, the gentleness as challenging questions arose. What plagued me was around chapter 4; I realized I was reminding myself of what Biblical scriptures sone of her suggestion followed aling and sometimes wondering if some if her suggestions were biblically sound. I appreciate and head the advice but I do know my Bible. I'm heartfelt for a new Christian who wouldn't know the word and what God has to say about some of the influences in the book.

Good book, bad performance

Awful whispery narration softened the consonants until inaudible and was annoying as stink. Good book otherwise.

Practical and easy to adapt advice!

Perhaps, I am a bit prejudiced (pun intended) as I have been following Anne's blog for many years now, but this book teaches a productive and balanced approach to life and living from a woman's perspective that I have needed for years :-)
