Summary

After barely surviving an onslaught of elves and Templars and assorted monsters—not to mention the devilish machinations of an old god—Gabe and his friends had hoped for some time to recover. But when an overwhelming threat shows up on their doorstep far ahead of schedule, they quickly discover that time is yet one more force stacked against them. Along with practically everything else.

So together with old friends and new, Gabe searches desperately for more allies to form an unprecedented coalition to stand against the coming End—all the while being careful not to mention that it’s at least partially his fault.

But even Gabe’s rock-bottom expectations are thwarted when the shaky path he envisions for their future suddenly crumbles beneath him, and he’s taken on a wild ride far from home...straight into the grasping claws of his own nightmares.

Dawn Razed is the fourth book in the Ethereal Earth series, an ongoing saga about identity and imagination...and how dangerous it is to have one without the other.

A fantastically grounded epic!

I’m in love with Josh’s writing. There’s an inherent sense that he is an author who knows so much more about this world than will ever make it into the book. What paradoxically makes this more apparent is his open admittance that he actually doesn’t know everything about these characters, as they have taken on such lives of their own. They are beautifully complex individuals and the humility of the author makes it all the more delightful to read.
The personal notes from Gabe at the beginning of every chapter are a particularly touching aspect, one that always provides a truly thought provoking and/or comforting little nugget for the reader/audience. I always enjoy that extra little perspective that can easily be related back to real world situations, grounding this story and keeping it safely away from “feeble minded fantasy” as Stephen Fry likes to call it.
I admit this story didn’t quite go in the direction that I was expecting, but to be honest I think that’s because I lack the creativity or the sheer brain power to sculpt such a rich world as this. Don’t be overwhelmed though, as I said it’s such an easy to follow and satisfying narrative that keeps this as a fantasy epic that’s so accessible in the way it establishes itself with real and relatable characters who have to live shoulder to shoulder with the “real world”, if not inside it at all times!
Josh’s performance is also absolutely perfect for this story. There is always the potential for an author to deliver a somewhat cringey or overly self satisfying delivery when acting out their own opus, but we have avoided that entirely here. I always felt Gabe’s joy and also his anguish in places where Josh’s voice breaks as he executes some of the more heartbreaking segments.

Overall I am absolutely thrilled that I took a chance with this series and cannot wait for more. It has genuinely enriched my life in all the ways that a good story should. Thank you so much, Mr. Erikson, and know that you have a perpetual fan right here :)

Another epic chapter in what is quickly becoming my favourite new series

I have to be honest, I expected this tome to be headed in a completely different direction than it did based on the last chapter of book three. What I got was something that was far better!

The story is breathtakingly fast paced and would fill a tv series with at least three seasons of exhilarating content. The character arcs and overall development to Gabe’s ‘family’ is developing beautifully and I genuinely am invested in each of their lives.

I’ve said this before in my other reviews of the series. If you’re looking for something that is exciting, well written and full of heart. You’ve come to the right place. I am so enveloped in the world that Josh has created, he can’t create the books fast enough to sate me. I was a late comer to the books but I’ve quickly caught up and eagerly await the next chapter.

Until next time, give this a go and even if you’ve read it, get the audiobooks. The narration by the man himself lends a whole new dimension to the stories.

I hate labelling stuff, but this is urban fantasy at its finest. I picked up the first book on a whim and can honestly say it’s one of the best decisions I’ve made for a long while!
