Summary

Some secrets carry the weight of the world.

Rose McKenzie may be far from Earth with no way back, but she's made a powerful ally - a fellow prisoner with whom she's formed a strong bond. Sazo's an artificial intelligence. He's saved her from captivity and torture, but he's also put her in the middle of a conflict, leaving Rose with her loyalties divided.

Captain Dav Jallan doesn't know why he and his crew have stumbled across an almost legendary Class 5 battleship, but he's not going to complain. The only problem is, all its crew are dead - all except for one strange, new alien being.

She calls herself Rose. She seems small and harmless, but less and less about her story is adding up, and Dav has a bad feeling his crew, and maybe even the four planets, are in jeopardy. The Class 5's owners, the Tecran, look set to start a war to get it back and Dav suspects Rose isn't the only alien being who survived what happened on the Class 5. And whatever else is out there is playing its own games.

In this race for the truth, he's going to have to go against his leaders and trust the dark horse.

Winner of a SFR Galaxy Award 2016 and the Prism Award 2016 for Best Futuristic.

Excellent

This was much better than I expected. A superb mix of space opera and romance. Rose is a wonderful feisty, intelligent lead character with her very dangerous unpredictable friend and ally. Great world building and intelligent ideas, a good romantic element, wide ranging conspiracy. He science fiction elements worked very well. Christina Delaine is an excellent narrator a who brings the story to lkfe.

85% good space and AI scifi, 15% Romance

Good story, some space opera, AI and a few fun, alien cultural difference elements.

Romance part is not too soppy, over the top or too cliché.

Honestly, I was a bit worried before I read it, the title and romance could have made this a bad choice for me.
But I am glad was proven wrong, with frankly a solid sci-fi, with a bonus mild but endearing romance story.

Great protagonist and plot

I enjoyed the way the author set this up and slowly revealed each layer. Rose was a worthy protagonist. So good.

Great fun

This was pretty much un-putdownable. Space aliens seen through the eyes of an abducted human, who is almost off the scale for resilience made this a great space opera.

This was a free book on Audible - thank you Audible - I’m liking this feature!
Woman abducted by aliens makes friends with previously trapped AI
Meets more ( and handsome ) aliens - but cliché
But it’s ok ..bit different and I got used to the narrator who I liked
I have downloaded the second ( also free) book then we’ll see if I like the series enough ti purchase the next
