Summary

When you're caught between two evils, only the most decisive will survive. The 13th audiobook in action supremo Stephen Leather's Spider Shepherd series is his most pulse-pounding yet....

A violent South London gang will be destroyed if Dan 'Spider' Shepherd can gather enough evidence against them while posing as a ruthless hit man. What he doesn't know is that his work as an undercover agent for MI5 is about to intersect with the biggest terrorist operation ever carried out on British soil.

Only weeks before, Shepherd witnessed a highly skilled IS sniper escape from a targeted missile strike in Syria. But never in his wildest dreams did he expect to next come across the shooter in a grimy East London flat. Spider's going to have to proceed with extreme caution if he is to prevent the deaths of hundreds of people, but at the same time, when the crucial moment comes he will have to act decisively.

The clock is ticking, and only he stands between us and Armageddon....

Brilliant

Absolutely brilliantly written by Stephen Leather. I have had audio books now for three years so as you can imagine I have listened to a lot of books, but Mr leather in my opinion is the best , I just wish the Dan shepherds character could come to life on our screens one day, and I have to say Paul Thornley is for me the best action narrator around

Brilliant

Great story. I love Spider Shepherd and this latest story doesn't disappoint. Plot is scarily realistic and makes you think about how our forces deal with terrorism threats.

Dan "Spider" Shepherd, on top form!

A big fan of Stephen Leathers novels , so was very happy when this, the latest in his "Dan Shepherd" series published.

Great interweaving of plots and characters, with a few "developing"twists in the tale as the story builds to an exciting climax.
Paul Thornley has a style of narration, and brings the characters to life for me.
Love this series I feel I know "Spider" and care about him and what happens in his life.
I've been hooked since "Hard Landing"!

A kong fu kicking, bad guy stripping, hero story for all.😊

I've read so many Stephen Leather books in this series; I now think Ben Shepherd as a family member, haha. This series is my go to series. I know they are consistent, the characters are well developed and the main character is the grounded superhero most men would love to be.

Another Nail biter

As per other reviews, this is another quality listen from Stephen Leather. His stories are so well constructed and intertwined. All the usual elements like, his son Liam, now a late teenager and wanting to go into the army, and how it causes Spider to think how his choices in life have affected others, and worrying for his son. The tough choices people have to make in situations that are complex and not black and white. The compassion towards other humans, and despite dealing with people who are determined to kill and destroy, compassion and a level head are often your greatest weapons.

Some of the discussions throughout these series of books are spot on. Racism, immigration, moral compass in life and admitting to making mistakes and wondering if we are doing the right thing at times are all explored. These books do air serious issues we are facing at this time, and tries to get to the nitty gritty I think, while obviously wanting to keep us on the edge of our seats.

A scary look into ISIS

If you could sum up Dark Forces in three words, what would they be?

in-depth, detailed, worrying

Any additional comments?

Stephen Leather shows us how vulnerable we might be, Paul Thornely makes it feel realistic with his excellent narration, let's hope the real Dan Shepard is alive and well.
