Summary

A young woman's body is discovered on a deserted footpath.

It seems like a simple crime for DCI Sophie Allen and her team to solve. But not when the victim's mother is found strangled the next morning. The case grows more complex as DCI Sophie Allen discovers that the victims had secret histories involving violence and intimidation. There's an obvious suspect, but Detective Allen isn't convinced. Could someone else be lurking in the shadows, someone savagely violent, looking for warped revenge?

Dark Crimes is the first in a series of detective thrillers featuring DCI Sophie Allen, head of the newly formed Violent Crime Unit in Dorset. She is pushed to the limit in her first major case as the team's head.

Awful Narrator!

The sotiry was good, but I have no idea why an Australian narrator was used for this story. The accents for various characters were so hard to listen to. I kept having to recheck where the book was set. Please change the narrator for the next books.

Narration was dreadful

Narration was dreadful - so bad it made me laugh aloud - I had to stop listening as it was unbearable.
Story was ok, but the DCI was portrayed as sickeningly perfect, which was a bit nauseating.

Good story - very difficult to listen to

This was a great story but the narration was really not good. The narrator applied a load of inappropriate accents that made most of the characters sound vaguely stupid. And as for the pronunciation of the town of Walsall - it made me scream.

Average

Sorry to say the narration made this terrible. I could never tell what accent she was trying to do, whatever it was it didn’t work.
The story was average no real twists

Excellent plot

First class police procedural with some nice twists. Lacked only the performance, simply a read through no emotional input, which was a shame.

1-2-3-Basic as can be

This book really followed the bland suspense thriller handbook. The main character WANTED to be dynamic but failed, she was as interesting as watching grass grow. Sofie had an irritating habit of giving her staff long drawn out instructions. They had no thoughts that she didn't tell them too. The killer was brutal but really boring also. Jealous and controlling boyfriend...blah, blah, blah. There were no ah ha moments in this story, no one you particularly want to champion and none of the characters were likeable or unlikable...just BLAH. The narration was off also. Sofie's delivery of hard nosed "don't f$%£ with me cop" lines were delivered with no real heat, it was just words on the a page. I am sure I have listened to Cat Gould before so I am wondering if she was given direction to deliver the story in this weird grandmotherly, spinster aunt kind of way. Just really off on every character. Weird upper crust accents, odd intonation and just plain old ridiculous voices that did not match the characters she was attempting to bring to life for the listener. I was excited because Sofie Allen has a whole series AND they are in the bonus category. I was really ready to tuck in and loose myself in a good series... but alas no. I've removed the remaining stories from my library. On the hunt for my next intense suspense thriller because this series is a BUST

Strength of main character.

Story was good and kept me coming back for more. But the narrator was terrible, the accents of each character changed every time they spoke. It was a certain put off.

could be good

The plot was good unfortunately the heavy Australian accent of the narrater made all the characters sound as if they'd just arrived from down under and the more superior police officers sounded like comic book characters. Sometimes the lack of pauses made it difficult to know when one scene stopped and the next started.. However despite this it's still a good listen as long as you can ignore the Australian twang.

couldn't finish this Audiobook

I don't normally write bad reviews, but I had to send feedback on this one.
I couldn't finish this Audiobook because the narrator is awful. for some reason, the audio people got an Australian narrator to narrate a book set in Dorset and the English accent is bad. there is no Dorset twang either, and the narrator speaks so slowly whilst reading the book.

I do hope to finish the story reading instead of listening, but it's not something I usually do.

I have over 300 audible books in my library with lots of narrators around the world. but this one really didn't match up.

Not much.

It was an ok story but please sack the narrator she was terrible. It spoiled a reasonable story.
