About this listen

A young woman's body is discovered on a deserted footpath.

It seems like a simple crime for DCI Sophie Allen and her team to solve. But not when the victim's mother is found strangled the next morning. The case grows more complex as DCI Sophie Allen discovers that the victims had secret histories involving violence and intimidation. There's an obvious suspect, but Detective Allen isn't convinced. Could someone else be lurking in the shadows, someone savagely violent, looking for warped revenge?

Dark Crimes is the first in a series of detective thrillers featuring DCI Sophie Allen, head of the newly formed Violent Crime Unit in Dorset. She is pushed to the limit in her first major case as the team's head.

Good story but the narrator made it sound as though Dorset had been completely overrun by antipodeans. Very distracting and reduced the overall enjoyment, instead of becoming wrapped up in what was being said I ended up focusing on how it was being said. I had intended to listen to subsequent books in the series but as they have the same narrator I don't think I can face the irritation.

Terrible Narration

Good story, dreadful narrator. Has slightly put me off getting the rest of the series. I struggled to follow the storyline because the narrator was just so bad. I have no idea what accents she was going for, and no idea why she intonated the narrative the way she did. A shame, because the overall story was good and I would like to hear more. Characters were good, everything wrapped up well at the end. Will maybe try the next in the series and see how that one sounds.

Great story line and setting, but not well narrated which meant story was not flowing

Story line

I think this is a reasonably good crime novel, set in Somerset. But I gave up about a third of the way through due to the awful narration. The narrator sounds like an australian woman, and veers from monotone and bored sounding, to bizarre accents, its very hard to differentiate the characters. Glad I got it on plus so didnt waste a credit.

Killed by awful narration

This is set in the uk. The narrator has an Australian accent and narrates locals in Oz, and posh / local accents appallingly.
The intonation / links between sentences / sections is flat, so badly that I wondered if it was computer generated. It can’t be because the accents wouldn’t be that bad if computer generated.
I gave up.

Awful narrator, no clue if the story is any good!
