Crown Me Dead took me a little while to get into. I’m not entirely sure why, but I think the slower pacing at the beginning played a part. I’d heard a lot about this book before picking it up, so perhaps my expectations were a little too high going in. For a while, I found myself wondering whether it was going to live up to them.
And then it all kicked off.
Once the pacing cranked up, I became much more invested and really started to enjoy the story. The plot twists were well done and kept me interested, although I do wish there had been a little more world-building. The kingdom felt surprisingly small, with much of what we see narrowed down to Elara’s home and the castle. I don’t need pages of history and geography to enjoy a fantasy, but I was left with questions about the wider world that I would have liked answered.
The characters were also a little difficult for me to pin down. Elara definitely had the most depth, and even when I didn’t necessarily agree with her choices, I could understand why she made them. Kael and Vale were harder for me. I struggled to fully connect with or root for either of them, which meant the twist towards the end didn’t hit me quite as hard as I think it could have if they had felt more fully developed.
That said, there was some genuinely beautiful prose throughout, the plot twists worked well, and once I got past my initial struggle, I really did enjoy the read.
It wasn’t perfect for me, but it certainly left me curious enough to see where the story goes next.
I’ll definitely be reading book two.
