Summary

A young woman is murdered in her Oslo flat. One finger has been severed from her left hand, and behind her eyelid is secreted a tiny red diamond in the shape of a five-pointed star – a pentagram, the devil’s star.

Detective Harry Hole is assigned to the case with his long-time adversary Tom Waaler and initially wants no part in it. But Harry is already on notice to quit the force and is left with little alternative but to drag himself out of his alcoholic stupor and get to work.

A wave of similar murders is on the horizon. An emerging pattern suggests that Oslo has a serial killer on its hands, and the five-pointed devil’s star is key to solving the riddle.

the Devil's Star

not only an exciting and intriguing story line in terms of a thriller, but a portrayal of a very human, flawed and strangely lovable main character, who despite all of his personal problems has real integrity and loyalty. It also tackles to some extent the social issues of drug use, alcoholism, racism and sexuality in a sensitive yet direct manner, and the narrative held me from start to finish - its a book one can listen to several times over and still enjoy. I can highly recommend it.

Absorbing!

If you could sum up The Devil's Star: A Harry Hole Thriller, Book 5 in three words, what would they be?

Complex, Emotional, Dark

Who was your favorite character and why?

Wonderful! was all the way with Harry Hole I wanted to scream and shout at him to get a grip not to give up.. also what deliciously complex characters especially the antag Tom. Gripped from beginning to end I loved the twists turns and assumptions I had first made where tossed out and burned as the story unfolded.

Have you listened to any of Sean Barrett’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Sean Barret's performance was flawless as usual, you are able easily to distinguish each of the characters, it is like a cinematic reel of film in your head, to me the narrator is just as important as the story it self.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

My favourite part had to be the lift scene, the accumulation of years of angst and hostilities between the two foes as there can only be one winner, superbly drawn, tense .

Any additional comments?

You cannot go wrong with Nesbo, but I would start at the beginning of this story arc if you want the full impact which is '.The Redbreast' and 'Snowman'.

Hard to Take Earphones off!

A beautifully crafted story which all pulls together into a powerful conclusion. The narrator is highly skilled and provies clear cut voices to the characters which makes for a powerful and precise listening experience. The tale is modern and does not avoid honest language when the characters demand it, but ths is not over-offensive and adds to the pace of events. if you enjoy modern detective crime, it is a must-have. I am devastated to have got to the end of my listen to this book and will sulk unreservedly.

Tremendous

How John Nesbo manages to keep writing fresh new tales that are so clever and gripping astounds me. Authors that I have loved over the years have often become too same-y, each book a regurgitation of the last but this isn't the case here! Sean Barrett is perfect. The range of accents, the cadance and pace are all superb.

Page turner

As always, a brilliantly written and narrated, tense and gripping story by a fantastic author.

Exciting, dark and very enjoyable

I love this series of books and I love Sean Barrett’s exceptional narration.
There are so many twists and layers to the story, and character development continues throughout the series. Evocative, sometimes heart stopping and always exciting.

So many turns in the Harry Hole series, they never disappoint!

Really enjoying the series of books and just when you think you know where the stores are going, something turns the narrative. Really engaging characters and looking forward to the rest

One of the best...

Great story! Put to rest some of the threads from previous books which were ready to be closed. Brilliant timing & twists not a predictable end.
Harry H at his best.
