    "Brilliant"

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Coming after the end of the trilogy, I had my reservations about this novel. But it was brilliant! Detective Moses Byone was as brilliant as he was during the trilogy and the plot itself was good. Fleshman has a talent for smooth story telling, fast pacing and characterisation.

Another harrowing case for Detective Moses Byone and his new partner, Armond.Perhaps if they had known their client, Marcel, better they would not have agreed to deliver four heavy chests to his home. When Marcel is murdered, they have to hide the chests and try to find out why and by whom he was killed. The answer to this latter question is totally unexpected.

Set in the often seedy and atmospheric areas of New Orleans, the 'Voodoo' detective gets to meet some rather colourful characters. For anyone yet to start this series, this would be a good place to begin as it is not reliant on any former knowledge from previous books and even Moses reintroduces himself. Nicholas Patrella is, again, the narrator and his is quite a task. Not only does his give smooth and distinctive voice to all of the characters but he also has to tackle phrases in French and Creole, which he does with aplumb, though sometimes with a strange accenting, but perhaps that is how it is spoken there. He also enthusiastically adds laughter and raised voices where called upon to do so in the text. However, he does have an initially disconcerting hesitancy at times when reading between conversations.but ignore this: the effect quickly ceases to intrude. Overall, a good performance.

This is an enjoyable book in an unusual series. The first three stories are best heard in order but this, the fourth, can be safely read without previous knowledge, as mentioned before. I was very fortunate in being gifted my copy of Death on Canal Street by the rights holder, via Audiobook Boom. My thanks. The more of this series I hear, the better I like it..

"Just couldn't get into it due to the narrator"
    Any additional comments?

Narrators are a very personal issue and for me this particular narrator did not make the book enjoyable. I just couldn't get into the book so I can't really comment on what it is like. Someone else might thoroughly enjoy it.

    "Another cool case for Byone"
What made the experience of listening to Death on Canal Street the most enjoyable?

Great narration and characters are all I could have hoped for. I love this series and Byone as the noir detective now has his partner on his cases that only makes it more fun and enjoyable. This story was so good I hoped it would not end. I can't get enough of this series. I highly recommend it. "A Thrilling Series"
If you could sum up Death on Canal Street in three words, what would they be?

    It really delivers!

What other book might you compare Death on Canal Street to and why?

I think the only time I compare books is when they are ranked horribly. This isn't the case and it stands alone, basking in its own power.

Have you listened to any of Nicholas Patrella’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Not yet. I plan to listen to The Cemetery Paintings next though; same author, previous book in the series.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

There were multiple twists that made me say, "What?! Rewind and listen again!"

"Another good book in the series"
Would you listen to Death on Canal Street again? Why?

No. It was a good story but not that good that I will listen to it again.

    Any additional comments?

I had received book 3 and book 4 of this series free from the author / narrator / publisher and I'm providing an unbiased review for both the books.

I left a more detailed review on the book #3's page. Don't want to duplicate the entire thing here. In summary though - The books work as stand alone story most of the time. I can easily see both books as an episode of one of the crime thriller shows on tv.

"Narration takes away from the story"

I really tried to get into this book, but I just couldn't. The narration was just so bad it made it impossible to enjoy it. The character voices were terrible and the way he pronounced certain words grated on my nerves. The premise of the book is intriguing enough that I may try it in print, but I just couldn't get through it as an audio book. I stopped and started this book 3 times in the hopes that something would have changed, but nope, couldn't do it.

Detective Byone has one wild case. Trying to catch a killer who witnesses claim to be the devil with red eyes. Byone weeds through the conductor, the french horn player and a few others before solving the case. Even though he finally identifies the killer he is
    unable capture him.

"Do not blink while you read this!!!"
If you could sum up Death on Canal Street in three words, what would they be?

    Turns, Twists and OMG!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Death on Canal Street?

When Moses saw Bastiste alive. What a twist.

Which character – as performed by Nicholas Patrella – was your favorite?

I really liked Armound. I think he pro-traded him to a tie and it was just as I pictured him.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

There were so many. It started right from the beginning and did not stop til the end, where it left you hanging right there for the next installment.

    Any additional comments?

This was the first book that I have read from Ricardo M. Fleshman and I was truly amazed at how he kept me interested all the way through the book. I thought that I would be lost coming into the 4th book of a series, but not at all. Characters were developed great and surprises were around every corner.

The narrator did a fantastic job and I could differentiate between each and every character and he kept the story moving at a great speed.

"This series gets better and better"

I was really looking forward to listening to this audiobook and it delivered. I was able to keep up much better in this book. I admit to not being able to keep all the characters straight in his other books but this one kept the count down which was a great thing for my listening brain. A big surprise in the end was a great asset to peaking my interest.
I am much more used to the narrator now, but I'm never going to really cotton to him. I think he is talented, but not my cup of tea. His French is a bit forced but better than his Italian. And as always, his voice is too soft for me to reconcile it with Moses.
The 'scenery' was great as always and one my favorite characters is New Orleans. I look forward to more!
I was gifted this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
