Summary

An insidious cabal has decided to change the direction of the United Alliance of Stars (UAS) with a coup d’etat - but not through a military takeover. They have devised a subtler coup: the manipulation of the Committee, the 15-star system that sets policy for the UAS.

This group of terrorists, calling itself WEP - for “We the People” - have issued an ultimatum: revise the UAS Constitution, or they will kill those who oppose the change. And good to their word, shortly afterward, Committee delegates are being killed.

The UAS Committee enlists their de facto troubleshooter, Anna Paulus, to shut down the cabal, but they insists she leave the NIA and manage UAS Committee Security. For Anna it’s a nightmare scenario, leaving her safe and comfortable world for a completely new environment dominated by macho men with years of combat experience. Adding to her concerns, she can imagine herself WEP’s prime target.

Anna soon realizes that things are not what they seem, and the cabal is quick to recognize her involvement as a potential problem. To make matters worse, the cabal is only months from succeeding - and only Anna and her red-headed krait stand in their way.

Enjoyable series

C R Daems likes his strong but unlikely women as his lead characters. He also likes the friends of his lead (in this case Anna) to have a strong supporting (and supportive) cast and as a result, this works nicely as a sci-fi mystery adventure with a 'cosy crime' element. Though there is plenty I find entirely unconvincing about Anna's character I have still enjoyed the series and hope there is more to come.

What worked as “unknown” doesn’t anymore.

The author ignorance on security worked when the MC was a low profile nobody. But having criminal in a car on the tarmac of the withe house waiting for the secretary of defence to board and throw a grenade in the plane as the door close? SERIOUSLY? The check point is INSIDE the white house lobby? SERIOUSLY?

This story made me nostalgic of star trek’s Red Shirts. Note: Marines make poor body guards. Wrong training. Wrong mission.

Don’t forget that the MC is supposed to be a genius class criminal investigator.

I love these books

The narration is a great match to Anna, so it's a pleasure to listen to the book. There's nothing jarring or out of place. I like the character and I love the narration. The narrators speech patterns and voice are really enjoyable, seemingly light and pensive, much like the character.

The action is good and shows how Anna's unconventionality draws people to her.

Very close between a 4 and a 5

I gave it a 5 even though it didn't rise tothe level of Murder Bot or Undying Mercenaries because yes I would listen to it and the rest of the series again. I will as soon as i get a release date for the next. it is as much a detective or police procedural story as SF. Kind of a petite Jack Reacher in a skirt!

Another good one

I sure hope this is not the last book in the series. It greatly reminds me of Honor Harrington.
