About this listen

The hit Commune Series is back with book five! Rejoin some of your old favorites and plenty of unforgettable new ones on another deadly romp through post-apocalyptic America.

Books and Bug are polar opposites, despite their friendship. Rumors on the road speak of a hospital in Washington D.C. Leading a small group of survivors, including pregnant women, the two travel in earnest to provide the soon-to-be mothers a safe place to deliver.

Bug, a natural, charismatic leader, refuses to leave anyone behind while the other, Books, is a pragmatic social outsider who wishes not to be responsible for the safety of others. Together, they're exactly what this group needs to survive.

But DC isn't exactly the safehaven they hoped for, having been divided into three major factions: the Mall—which is controlled by a man named Knox and his lieutenants—Columbia Heights to the north, and Anacostia to the south.

On arrival, Books immediately recognizes that the people of the Mall are in a wartime posture. Uncomfortable with the idea of being pulled into someone else's war, he advises that the entire company should depart. Bug, upon realizing that the Mall is wonderfully organized with hydro-electric power, security, and a functioning hospital, refuses that advice, stating that it is more than fair that they should help their new benefactors defend their adopted territory.

Can their bond endure their conflicting points of view or will they be drawn against each other, and into a war that will consume everyone...leaving DC in Ashes?

I absolutely loved books 1 to 4 of Commune. Brilliant stories, narrated so well by RC Bray. Rich characters, flaws and all - and a lot of humour. I may be remembering things with slightly rose tinted glasses... Book 5 is set in a different locale with different characters. That's fine - and there's plenty of interesting dialogue and depth to some of the relationships. However... some of the characters seem to be so inconsistent in how they behave and see the world. One who is sensitive and loving in one scene is (somewhat pointlessly) killing someone with his bare hands in another. Someone who is - in some respects - quite bookish and smart, frequently either loses the plot or fails to deal with pretty basic situations with any sort of real sense.

A lot of the story is a basically meaningless battle between groups that don't really have much to differentiate them. I know that's a recurring theme in post apocalyptic story telling - but it grates more than ever here.

Unfortunately - not of the same depth and quality of 1 to 4 - and, sadly, almost completely devoid of the humour of the first four.

Less consistency, depth and humour than 1-4

Another great addition to the series, book 6 here I come!!! RCB needs an award, makes every story he’s involved with a winner!

Great characters with a tense storyline

Read the first 4 commune books? this is the start of a new series in the same universe! if you loved the previous 4 then you'll love this one if you're not already following the authors on social media you won't regret looking them up. you'll feel like part of a bugger family.

RC Bray. he's like the Barry White of narration can't do a bad performance.

Thanks for an excellent listen, and Joshua if you read this specific review I'd appreciate a shout out on SDFTSB Charlie English.

I have been a fan of Commune Series since I discovered it and itching for each next book to listen to. This was outstanding, hoping and praying that there is a next one, glad to see some of the past characters making the headlines. Joshua Gayou and Devon C. Ford not forgetting R.C. Bray, many thanks and look forward to the next one (hoping mightily).

Loved every single minute
