About this listen

How can a colony on Mars survive when the greatest danger on the planet is humanity itself.

All contact is lost with the first human colony on Mars during a long, intense sandstorm. Satellite imagery of the aftermath shows extensive damage to the facility, and the fifty-four colonists who called it home are presumed dead. Three years later, a new mission sets down on the planet surface to investigate what remains of the derelict site.

But, its not long before they realize the colony is not as lifeless as everyone thought. Someone is still alive -- hiding out somewhere. Yet, before they can find the elusive colonist a strange illness starts to affect the crew. Pressure now mounts on Biologist, Dr. Jann Malbec, to locate the source and find a way to fight it.

However, as she investigates she begins to suspect a dark and deadly secret lurking within the facility. A secret that threatens not just the crew but the entire population of Earth. With limited resources and time running out, she must find some answers and find them fast. Because if she doesn't, none of them will be going home.

From the reviews I really was expecting more, but sadly it ended up being a bit of an anticlimax.

As sci-fi went it was an interesting enough concept and story, but that was all. I wasn't gripped, and I felt nothing for the characters in the end. I really wanted it to be more and kept waiting for it to really start drawing me in... then it finished.

I felt like it was a bit truncated. Like the author had started out with a certain word-count in mind, and to achieve that length the end had just been dropped in at the required word count. When the end came I was actually genuinely surprised.

All in all, not a bad story, but not good either. Performance was okay and up to the standard I would have expected.

It was just okay...

As a hard SF author myself, I often find others' stories weak, full of scientific errors or just badly structured. This one, however, was a wonderful surprise and I thorougly enjoyed it. Hard SF in the vein of my own work - perhaps that's why I liked it so much.

A ship lands on Mars to investigate what destroyed the first colonists. It is the first trip for several years. When they enter the main colony dome, they are shocked to discover an apple, with a bite taken out of it, and, it is still moist. So begins an exciting adventure riddled with fear, apprehension and not a little violence.

Book one was so good, I have just purchased the rest of the trilogy.

Well done Gerald, and Nicol. Totally absorbing.

Surprisingly Good

Enjoyed the characters and context - first sci fi audible - looking forward to the next instalment

Great story

First of all it’s far too short for the price/ credit and by the looks of it the rest of the series are the same, 4/5 hours seems a rip off honestly and there are far more worthy titles with 15-20 hours. a decent story that gets you thinking and isn’t as predictable as some that I’ve read (so far)

Far too short
