About this listen

When the Towers arrived, without warning, without communication of intent or indication of reasoning, chaos ensued . . .

Decades later, enchantments from the Tower and mana cores from the creatures within power the most advanced technologies in the real world. What was once a puzzling mystery has become a necessary part of economic growth.

For Arthur Chua, the Malaysian Beginner Tower has always been his objective. Climbing the Tower is the only form of escape available for one without money or connections. He's not looking to be a hero or famous, just a survivor.

Fate, on the other hand, has other plans for him. At long last, the reason for the arrival of the Towers will be revealed, and humanity will once again experience a seismic shift when the truth appears.

Of course, Arthur's going to have to survive long enough for that to happen . . .

This is possibly the most unique book in this genre. The author Tao Wong has already proven his talent in many of his books but with this one instead of being centred around a Western European /American dynamic it has taken a focus for a a different continent (Asia) with all its diversity and local good and bad points. Having done business in Malaysia I can see this is a realistic view on how a post tower world could look in this region and cannot compliment the writing enough in this regard.

By being based in Malaysia it show cases the facets of that region in both the good and the bad. The MC has to operate in that region so we get to see it through his eyes. The multicultural language, how the sexes and minorities interact with each other and the difference of the haves and the have nots. In addition it does show case the messy reality of the impact a Tower might actually have, which is rarely explained in other books, Usually it is it tends to a minor part of the backdrop where in this book it is in the core of the story the MC has to play through. In most books they are bog standard evil corporations or gangsters but this book is is clearly showing how a character from a poor background really has to live. Quite inciteful.

The text included a tiny bit of other languages which really adds to the flavour of the story and compliments to the Narrator, Jamie Zubairi. For me this is a well rounded clever piece of story telling. I think it is one of the better evolutions of this genre as we move from the penny dreadful early books (which I loved) to stories with richer backgrounds for the MC to play in.

Looking forward to book 2, it cannot happen fast enough!

Interesting world and great cultural tower story

The plot is disjointed and nothing seams to make sense. Besides that the characters are not remotely interesting.

Very poor
