Summary

This program includes a bonus conversation with the author.

A trans boy determined to prove his gender to his traditional Latinx family summons a ghost who refuses to leave in Aiden Thomas' paranormal YA debut Cemetery Boys, described by Entertainment Weekly as "groundbreaking".

Yadriel has summoned a ghost, and now he can't get rid of him.

When his traditional Latinx family has problems accepting his true gender, Yadriel becomes determined to prove himself a real brujo. With the help of his cousin and best friend, Maritza, he performs the ritual himself and then sets out to find the ghost of his murdered cousin and set it free.

However, the ghost he summons is actually Julian Diaz, the school's resident bad boy, and Julian is not about to go quietly into death. He's determined to find out what happened and tie off some loose ends before he leaves. Left with no choice, Yadriel agrees to help Julian so they can both get what they want. But the longer Yadriel spends with Julian, the less he wants to let him leave.

A Macmillan Audio production from Swoon Reads

"The novel perfectly balances the vibrant, energetic Latinx culture while delving into heavy topics like LGBTQ+ acceptance, deportation, colonization, and racism within authoritative establishments." (TeenVogue.com)

"This stunning debut novel from Thomas is detailed, heart-rending, and immensely romantic. I was bawling by the end of it, but not from sadness: I just felt so incredibly happy that this queer Latinx adventure will get to be read by other kids. Cemetery Boys is necessary: for trans kids, for queer kids, for those in the Latinx community who need to see themselves on the page. Don’t miss this book." (Mark Oshiro, author of Anger Is a Gift)

underwhelming

I dont like giving negative reviews so I will be brief. I didnt find this book to be well written. The story was intresting but predictable and it had many tropes that I dont particularly enjoy. If it didn't have the representation I wouldn't have read it. I think it fits better targeted at a younger audience, kids between the ages of 11 to 17. I would have adored it back then I am certain.

Utter Book Magic

By the end of chapter one I had tears in my eyes so I knew this was going to be one hell of a ride and I was right. It gripped me, it moved , it made me laugh and it dealt with some heavy themes with the deftest of touch. I just adored this story and the wonderful characters in it. As a parent of a trans teen I am so so grateful this book exists . Thank you Aiden Thomas for writing it ❤️p.s Avi Roque did a brilliant job bringing these characters to life too on the audiobook ❤️

Excellent trans rep!

I was super hyped for this book, so I was thrilled to find it available as an audiobook so soon. I've just finished it and I can say that it (mostly) lived up to that hype!! I absolutely ADORED the characterisation and the premise itself was brilliant. I loved the burgeoning relationship between the boys, and the fierceness of their feelings for one another was a real highlight for me. The only reason I haven't given this the full stars is that it lacks on one major front for me: the author is desperately intent on not using "said" whenever a character speaks and that ruined it for me a little bit as everyone is uttering or whispering or hissing under their breath and it's really pretty jarring at times. Now, the other reason wouldn't have lost it a star on its own, but I did also think the overall plot was lacking and the foreshadowing was incredibly heavy handed, but I don't think that's entirely a problem given that this is a YA, especially as the characterisation and romance between the boys is more of the focus. That said, this probably could have been rated for a slightly younger audience. Overall, I enjoyed this book and I especially love that it was narrated by someone who is trans Latinx because that definitely levels up the narration.

Absolutely amazing!!!

As a bisexual trans man, this book spoke to me on so many levels. I felt so seen and heard through Yadriel and his experiences. This is a book I’ve been waiting for for so long and I wish I could have read something similar to this when I was in high school. The entire thing was just so beautifully written with so much care and attention to latinx culture as well as lgbtq+ issues. Highly recommend. This is one of my new favorites!!

New Favorite

It's been a while since I read a book and loved every minute of it. Cemetery Boys was absolute perfection from start to finish. There was literally nothing I didn't love about this book. Plus, the narrator (who actually is trans which is so great!) is incredible. I literally cannot recommend this book highly enough. Would give 10 stars if I could.

Young queer love at its finest

This novel ticks a lot of social issue boxes but does so in a way that isn’t overbearing or preachy. I thoroughly enjoyed the storyline that wasn’t outright predictable like most YA novels tend to be. The narrator gives a great performance also. As a non binary person who didn’t have books with trans/queer representation as a teenager, it makes me happy to see these issues being portrayed in a positive light.

I laughed, I cried, I couldn’t stop listening

Oh my god, this book was amazing. The book itself was so so so good—rich + detailed characters, super cool concept, and a plot that had me constantly guessing at how the book would end. I predicted a few things, but as a whole the ending was so surprising and amazing. The narrator makes this book even better. I don’t know shit about Spanish, and if I’d just been reading this I would’ve stumbled over every Spanish word + definitely would’ve been mentally pronouncing the characters’ names wrong. The voices he used for each character were subtle but distinct, and I really enjoyed the narration! I can’t recommend this audiobook enough!

A vibrant world and a fun story

I enjoyed exploring the world in this book with these characters. In my opinion, there are some frustrating bits with the plot in the middle where the actions of the characters don’t really make sense based on how they’ve acted before or the timeline doesn’t quite make sense. Still the overall arc works, these things having more to do with filling the time as the characters get to know each other while attempting and ultimately failing to make any progress on solving a mystery; more or less stumbling into the resolution by accident. The performance is well acted, if somewhat halting, with big pauses between almost every line. Not my preferred style, but still okay.

Fantastic story!

I never leave reviews- let me just get that out of the way. This book, and I'm not even finished listening, is fantastic. I love the dynamic personalities, the struggles Yadriel goes through... The narrator drove it home for me. I can't wait to finish it, so I can listen to it again.
