About this listen

Thomas Kydd, a hero of Trafalgar, holds the glory of being Post-Captain of the 32-gun frigate, L'Aurore. A Caribbean posting seems a welcome respite for the war hero, but when more and more merchantmen begin vanishing from the sea, fear starts to spread. Kydd must embark on a dangerous game of espionage in order to destroy this new and terrible danger to the Empire.

Critic reviews

"Stockwin's writing is enriched by his own experiences in the Royal Navy, which gives scenes of fighting and tempest an authenticity to delight anyone who shares his passion for the sea." ( Daily Telegraph)
"Paints a vivid picture of life aboard the mighty ship-of-the-line" ( Daily Express)

Excellent, apart from the narrator’s inability to pronounce ‘Lieutenant’ in the British style, regularly using ‘Lootenant’ rather than ‘Leftenant’! Became grating and irksome after a while.

The Somerset v Stewart case (1772) established that any slave in England was legally free, the author should have researched this instead of going for a shock slavery story.

Tiresome ignorance

the story is not too far fetched, it kept me interested throughout. i would recommend the kydd series.

The author does a great job and moving along with pace. Not only does he capture the period really well with the lifestyle of Royal Navy officers but also explaining the running of a warship. Interesting plot and well narrated.

My first book by this author and an introduction to Christian Rodska. Enjoyed so much I,ve placed the rest of the series in my wish list. If you like history and you like the sea this book is the one for you, a well researched and totally enthralling trip into history at sea. Just plain good listening. Thanks U enjoyed the book Colin X
