Summary

The third instalment in a gripping and atmospheric crime series set on a small island where there is no escape....

Intruders here are bound to die.

As the sun sets on a cold November evening, the tiny community of St Agnes prepares for their annual Fifth-of-November festivities. Moments before the fireworks are scheduled to commence, an islander discovers a charred body left on the bonfire, and quickly it becomes clear that a killer is at large.

Ben Kitto is the Deputy Chief of Police for the Scilly Isles, and with a killer on the loose, he has no choice but to forbid all residents from leaving the island. With a population of just 80 people, everyone is a suspect and no one is safe.

When threats start appearing, written in the old Cornish language, Ben suspects that the killer’s motive is to rid the island of the newcomers who threaten their traditions. With time running out, Ben hurries to discover the secrets of the island’s peculiar residents, but he knows it’s only a matter of time before another fire is started.

No place to run.

No place to hide.

Kindly pay this narrator by the hour ...

... he may slow down to a more pleasant pace then. Story is gripping, just requires a narrator who takes the time to fully pronounce the words and notice full stops.

Gripping who dun it.

As in the other DI Kitto books the narrator is excellent. The story twists and turns, a great listen.

poorly researched, well narrated

The story and characters are interesting enough to keep listening, the narration is great but the book series is so poorly researched, it's really grating. According to the author, seabirds eat seed, czechoslovakian wolf dog has blue eyes (should be amber) and divers breathe from oxygen tanks (rather than air tanks). it seems like detail but the book is riddled by lots of obvious and less obvious mistakes and its annoying and distracting. this book shows me how much research actually normally goes into books, but not these ones.

Very annoying

I pity the poor people of the Isles of Scilly if they are unlucky enough to have a murder and have a detective this bad. The lead character is annoyingly dense, or is it the author being annoying in not making him 'get' the clues that she is describing in the book she's writing? Maybe she wants us to feel this frustrated? Even the dog is quicker off the mark than Ben Kitto.

Saying that, Burnt Island is an easy listen for a long car journey, with a great location, and plot devices you can only get with stories set on small islands in bad weather. Island life is quite compelling to peak into. So I have read all the previous books and will probably get the next one! I hope it's less frustrating though.

Another superly read book by Stephen Perrin

The series is good, but the narrator is absolutely brilliant, it as if I know the place and the characters by now.

Enjoyable but a bit repetitive

I’ve read all three books, very pleasant and you feel you get to know the characters. This felt a bit like a Shetland story... I’d like Kitto to solve a murder with his own mind, it does feel like he ‘stumbles’ across what’s happened.. that said enjoyed listening and narrative is great!!

Another great story from St Agnes this time

Another great murder mystery set in St Agnes this time. Really enjoyed the storyline and the lives of all the characters & getting to know the regulars too now as well. Kept me guessing right till the end. The descriptions of the Isles of Scilly are so vivid & the narrator does a great job it brings back so many memories of a visit many years ago. I think that's why I tried the books and haven't looked back. looking forward to the next in the series & hoping that Ben finds some happiness in his life hopefully with Zoe.....
