About this listen

Bones was born with the miraculous power to heal, but all her gift has brought is death.

As a child, her older brother trained her to survive, and so survive she did. The blood on her hands will never wash off, she is broken and scarred in more ways than one, but she survived.

After finally escaping the ruthless raiders who imprisoned her for twelve long years, Bones is haunted by her past and desperate for atonement. Freedom is short-lived, however, as the rumors of her abilities catch up to her. Dragged to the northwest mountain stronghold known as the Vault, Bones finds herself involuntarily drawn to the tight-knit crew who captured her, and the feelings she begins to develop for Trey, the heart of the crew, scare her more than all the horrors of her past.

Bones struggles to maintain her distance, navigate her trauma, and deal with the new horrifying ways her healing powers are used to root out a budding revolution. As her defenses slowly break down, everything she believes about herself and the world is challenged, forcing her to confront the question: what are you surviving for?

Contains mature themes.

I was so looking forward to listen to Bones. Everyone recommended it. I looooved up till chapter 9. Beautiful writing, hitting all the beats only for the MC to crash and burn in chapter 10. My biggest trigger is when characters do something completely erratc, evil, hurtful, and wrong without a solid, reasonable justification. I think if she told Trey to leave her alone, might still be okay for me to read on, but to choose the biggest jerk in the book, to hurt the nicest character in the book was just a big fat no. And her reason for doing it did not exist anymore. It felt forced and it broke everything I liked about Bones. I simple do not care for her character to keep on reading. And its super dissapointing because the writing is gorgeous and the narration is beautiful. The story could have used a deep development that would have kept Bones actions justifiable and still like her character, even if she is flawed and broken. Its an art to hit those mental beats and sad that it wasn't met 100% with this one. But I do get why it does so well. Just didn't do it for me.

Chapter 10 when everything falls flat

Bones is a compelling blend of magic, emotion, and resilience, following a gifted healer whose powers are matched only by the depth of her past trauma. K.L. Speer doesn’t shy away from portraying the impact of that trauma—instead, she weaves it directly into the character’s journey, allowing readers to genuinely feel her struggle, strength, and growth.

What stands out most is the balance between darkness and hope. Amid the pain and memories she carries, there are threads of love, healing, and possibility that keep the story emotionally rich and deeply human. The world Speer builds is immersive, and the protagonist’s voice is honest and vulnerable in a way that lingers long after the chapter ends.

The book closes on a cliffhanger that leaves you both satisfied and eager for more. It’s clear there is still much to uncover about Bones—her power, her past, and her future—and I’m excited to see where the next installment takes her

emotional depth - great read
