Believable characters well developed. Not your usual derring-do cobblers. Thoughtful and accurate with some more profound undertones. The whole series is great actually.

The book is somewhat slow to start with, but this is just while the background of the main characters are brought to life. Once the war clouds loom, the pace quickens...as did my pulse! I love old aeroplanes and accounts of aerial campaigns, and the descriptions of flying and combat in the air are first rate. I shall be starting volume II very soon!

I enjoyed the narration, the reader had a good grasp of the accents and terminology and was entertaining.

The first part of the story was interesting, getting to know some of the charecters and how they ended up together. But there was an odd lack of getting details right, like why was everyone still a Pilot officer after years in the RAF, with promotion to Squadron Leader skipping the ranks in between

I found the ending unpleasant. Not just sad, one accepts battle of Britain novels are likely to have a sad ending, but an unpleasant and unnecessary story arc for one of the main characters.

I finished it but won't be reading the others.
