About this listen

Being a teenage vampire sucks, literally.

When you learn your whole life has been a lie, who can you turn to? Who can you trust to help you make things right again? Drakkar has led a sheltered life. Only son of the exiled princess, Absinthe Dragoni, he was nurtured with the lies and venom she fed him. Humans are nothing more than cattle bred to sustain their kind, and her half brother, Jared Bonatelli, stole a kingdom that is rightfully hers.

Serenity Avery, a young witch in training, wants nothing more than to follow in her mother’s footsteps and join the ranks of the Dark Order’s Conservatorship. When she happens upon a disoriented vampire in the middle of the night, her first mission is presented to her. Expose him and his mother’s newest scheme so they can be neutralized. But what if none of it is true? What if Drakkar is nothing but another pawn in Absinthe’s game of chess? Will Serenity be able to save him before it’s too late? Or will Drakkar be lost Beyond the Lie?

This audiobook is almost teenager-y in plot and content. It was saved from being specifically for a younger audience because of the characters surrounding the protagonists. They have backstories that feed into a larger series plot and as such I enjoyed the story very much. In fact, despite not having read or heard the previous books in the series, I did not feel lost though i think i may have missed something interesting. The series has elements of paranormal, perhaps time-travel or immortals and much more. This particular audiobook has the makings of young love, teenage rebellion, issues with parents, strong characters and sacrifices. However it is much more complex and that makes the book so much more interesting. I won't give anything away, but I do think hearing the other books in the series, though not required, may make the book more interesting!

This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.

Good, if a little Young Adult
