Summary

Behind Gym Doors will be a revelation to everyone who thinks that being a personal trainer is just a matter of standing around telling unfit people what to do! Matt Hodges runs one of London’s most exclusive studios, a personal trainer to the rich and famous–actually, make that the super-rich and mega-famous–and he has seen it all. Taking a break from the high-powered world of training the elite, Matt now proves that he is as adept with words as he is with weights, in this delve into the sweaty side of gyms and fitness studios.

Matt brings a playlist of characters who seem to be from another world and that is because, in the main, they are. You will meet sinister Russian gangsters, unreal housewives, superstar singers, business billionaires and famous footballers–not to mention the breast-is-best yummy mummies of London. Matt has a keen eye for the absurd but tells his stories with kindness–essential, really, when you consider some of the things that happen to him and his clients!

But this isn’t just a "not-quite-tell-all" memoir. Told in Matt’s mindful, intimate, and humorous style, Behind Gym Doors has a pragmatic and down-to-earth attitude to the fitness business. Do not come here if you want to find a new fad diet. But on the other hand, do come here if you want fad diets to be explained and put in their place.

There are a lot of laughs in Behind Gym Doors, but also a fair share of ups and downs. Come through the doors to discover that the quest for perfect health, well-being, and fitness requires sacrificing so much more than just blood, sweat, and tears.

A fantastic listen

We need more books like this that give insights of the light and dark sides of certain industries and professions. They are out there but not enough in some industries.

This was really insightful, entertaining and funny. Very well written.

POSSIBLE SPOILER
A message to Matt. When it comes to your client who passed away - your feelings of confusion due to the initial lack of contact were completely normal and were not 'selfish'. You clearly cared about this client a lot.

Thank you for such a good listen.

Inside skinny

If you want to be entertained and get the inside skinny into the personal fitness world, from both the industry side and client side, this book will reveal all…and some! Really proud of Matt, who is an amazing personal trainer and all round great bloke and now published author! He has knocked this one out of the park!

Brilliant book, wonderfully told

I’d already read the hardback of this book but wanted to hear it again in the author’s voice and I’m so glad I did. I loved hearing the stories brought to life - they were always so funny and poignant but hearing them in Matt’s voice really added to their depth.

As an actual review of the book, it’s for everyone. Yes it’s about fitness but there is something in there for everyone. And it’s genuinely so funny. Like, laugh out loud funny. It’s also a really relatable book - the mega rich clients may not be, but the author’s thoughts and reactions are so true and honest. And he never pulls any punches in making himself the butt of the joke - this isn’t about mocking people or making light of insecurities and issues.

It’s also thought provoking in examining and questioning what the fitness world is turning into with various fads, some of which are silly, some of which are dangerous. All along the author is the voice of reason in disassembling much of this madness.

And finally I think the personal difficulties shared feel wholly relatable and again are told so honestly you feel what the author is feeling.

Couldn’t recommend this book more in any format - really loved it
