Summary

If your bike has become your biggest escape of late, Back in the Frame from award-winning blogger, Lady Vélo, is the book for you

Jools Walker rediscovered cycling aged 28 after a decade-long absence from the saddle. When she started blogging about her cycle adventures under the alias Lady Vélo, a whole world was opened up to her. But it's hard to find space in an industry not traditionally open to women - especially women of colour.

Shortly after getting back on two wheels, Jools was diagnosed with depression and then, in her early 30s, hit by a mini-stroke. Yet, through all of these punctures, one constant remained: Jools' love of cycling.

Funny, moving and motivational, this book tells the story of how Jools overcame these challenges, stepped outside her comfort zone and learned to cycle her own path. Along the way she shares a wealth of inspirational stories and tips from other female trailblazers, and shows how cycling can and should be a space for everyone.

A celebration of cycling, Back in the Frame will motivate you to get back on your bike and enjoy the ride, no matter what life throws at you.

What a ride 🤩

I really enjoyed Jools' journey, its not all about miles and racing, a wonderful account of how a bicycle can be so entwined with life and the freedom that comes from pursuing your passion. Great listen. I'll be recommending it to the Bicycle Adventure Club crowd 🤩

One of the best audiobooks I have listened to

This is one of the best audiobooks I have listened to all year. I am a keen cyclist myself, but have learnt so much from Jools in this book. In particular, I am most glad for her reminding me of the sheer joy and delight I have in cycling - I have even put down strava for a bit! Jools really really loves cycling, and uses it as a tool to connect people and to discuss social problems diplomatically. Jools does all of this without judgement, and with real kindness. It is that which makes her writing really accessible and beautiful to listen to. I have recently been trying my best to read more ‘women in sports’ writing, and even more recently ‘black women in sports’ writing. The first is difficult to come across, the latter even harder. So I am grateful that Jools chose to put the hardwork into writing and publishing and promoting this book. Thank you Jools!

The most profound part of the whole book though, was at the beginning, where Jools’ brother is teaching her to cycle. ‘Will I fall off?’ Jools asks. ‘Probably,’ says Anthony, ‘but we will just try again’.
This sentence is a one that I am going to keep in my heart for a very long time, and remember when things get a little bit tough. Anthony was honest with Jools but gave her the strength to carry on, and so will I channel my inner Anthony!
