Revenge is a dish best served cold.

When private chef, Isla Merrin accepts a summer position at Maplehurst Manor, she's not there for the prestige or the pay. She's there because her twin sister Clemmie worked in these kitchens and weeks after leaving, took her own life.

Nestled in the exclusive hills of the Cotswolds, behind Maplehurst's honey-stone walls and manicured lawns lies a darker truth. Staff members flee in terror. Young women disappear into silence. And all the while, the show goes on.

As Isla uncovers a pattern of abuse hidden beneath layers of wealth, surveillance and privilege, she realises Clemmie wasn't the first victim and won't be the last. But exposing the truth means playing a dangerous game with people who are always one step ahead.

Some secrets are worth dying for. Others are worth killing to protect.

From international best-seller, K L Slater comes another gripping psychological thriller about power, complicity, and one woman's quest for justice, narrated by Annabel Scholey (RIVALS, THE COUPLE NEXT DOOR) and Laura Aikman (GAVIN & STACEY).

I had high expectations after enjoying several of author’s other books. Unfortunately this didn’t live up to quality of other books. I was waiting for the twist or pinnacle event.

Meh 😒

As always, an easy and engaging read, despite a few unbelievable parts - the fact that the heavy security measures fail to spot Alice's sneaky escape route; Celeste's lack of questions when confronted by the chef wielding a knife; the too easy death of James by anaphylactic shock yet the police don't question where he got the food from, nor why his ankles and wrists would've borne friction burns; the fact that James allows himself to be tied up in the first place and then it doesn't cross his mind that everything he was saying could've been recorded (as it was). Celeste's character isn't consistent either. Also, the author seems to have forgotten that Isla had told Alice that Clemmie was her sister when they went for a drink, so why does Alice say in her journal that she's shocked and angry at Isla when she discovers this connection? Despite these inconsistencies, which smack of amateurish writing, the overall story was entertaining and worthwhile.

Definitely a page turner

A sinister atmosphere was created, but the story lacked plot/twists unfortunately.

The reading was good, but too much in the story was unbelievable

KL Slaters books usually have me guessing throughout only to surprise me at the end. This one did not. I guessed exactly who the perpetrators were and why from the second hour listening. A few major plot holes… without spollers - nobody recognised Isla, including the main villain..?

Happy to pay for Slaters books - happy that this one was free.

Not one of her better books
