A Post-Apocalyptic EMP Saga Filled With Fascinating Characters & Prepper Info

Society collapsed. But the true nightmare is only beginning…Bear and Laurel are still reeling from the attack on their small community. Their clinic has been reduced to ashes, and what little remains of their medical supplies won’t last long. They need time to recover—but fate has other plans.

A brutal illness rages through the battered community, and there’s nothing Laurel can do to stop it. One by one, Thunder Bay’s residents are falling sick. Now, Trent is infected—and getting worse. With only natural remedies at their disposal, time is running out. They have to stop the spread before it’s too late.

Meanwhile, Gideon and Sharon travel with Kate, desperate to leave old enemies behind. But long, dangerous miles still separate them from the relative safety of Thunder Bay. And to make matters worse, someone is following them…With two frightened children depending on them for protection, they’d rather avoid a fight. But every time they slip away, their pursuers close in again. It’s not bandits. It’s not hostile locals. They’re being hunted.

And soon, there’ll be nowhere left to run…

This is the eighth book in the series and I have become acquainted with the principal characters in the series up until now. It might work to start here as some sketching of the relationships is included, but I have a deeper and richer understanding of the backstories and nature of these characters. The character arcs continue to develop here and one undergoes a major life change. Grace Hamilton is not sparing of her creations and an important character perishes in one of the several action scenes.
There is plenty of conflict and difficulties to overcome, both internal to Thunderbay and unwittingly from a crime family with an Italian-sounding surname based in the nearby city. The story arc of another old acquaintance with a new helper and her own involvement with the Rossi's emerging, threads into the Thunder Bay community suffering with pneumonic plague. This poses practical and ethical problems for Laurel and Bear as their supplies had been destroyed in a fire described in the previous book. Ingenuity, determination and fairness are all on show in this story. There is a temporary resolution, but it's clear the story will continue. I will be keen to learn more of these characters and their exploits.
There was heightened interest for me as there was also a news story about pneumonic plague in Russia, whilst listening.

The narrator, as ever, delivers distinctive voices for each character with the appropriate emotions and tone.

Continues saga of familiar characters in dystopia.
